JP Murphy Bros in Enniscorthy, Co Wexford is celebrating 20 years of providing its clients with a top class service. Building Ireland felt it was time to find out more about the successful structal steel and cladding business from owner and founder John Murphy.
Set-up by John Murphy in 1998, JP Murphy Bros has grown to become a leader in fabrication and installation of steel from its base in the south east of Ireland.
The supply and installation of industrial and commercial steel buildings has been a key part of the business which John built from the ground up two decades ago.
Since that time, extensive and invaluable knowledge of the industry has been gained and the company’s highly-skilled employees are able to achieve the most efficient structural solutions to give clients the best value.
When John Murphy started out, it was in a small shed in Barmoney and today he is employing 12 staff and still running the business with the help of his brother Patrick, who came on board shortly after things got up and running – hence ‘JP Murphy Bros’ hangs over the door.
Building Ireland caught up with John recently to learn more about the business, it’s history and some of the more recent projects which have been carried out.
“What we mainly do is fabrication steel work – supply and erect – and then we do bits of cladding as well,” John explained.
“We do roller shutter doors as well and we’re able to supply and fit those too, so there’s no shortage of what we can offer our clients here.”
When John started out fabricating on his own it was in a workshop at home as a sole trader and he then made the decision in ‘98 to expand in an effort to satisfy the demand he had from customers.
After acquiring some land, he built a custom fitted premises, Patrick soon joined him afterwards and the pair grew the business venture together.
“When I left school, I went working with an uncle of mine and he was working with Hughes in Enniscorthy. So I went with them and eventually did my own thing in my spare time,” John outlined on the history of his company.
“That got to be too much so I went out on my own then full-time and my father gave me a little shed to get started. So then I went and got a few acres and built my own place – my brother came on board after and we’re going well since.”

“We’re very busy at the moment. Most of our customers would be within a 60-mile radius – mostly around the south east,” said the Managing Director.
“I’d say 60 per cent of them would be the same clients coming back to us and the reason for that is that they know that the job will be done right and it’ll be cost effective as well.”
Along with their work on general steel structures, JP Murphy Bros, which has been CE approved for the past three years, also supply an erect farm buildings, installing traditional steel framed hay barns, large bail stores and grain stores, as well as well as constructing a bespoke building to any size.
The company has managed to build an excellent reputation for its work within the agri industry and is renowned for providing good quality solutions that stand the test of time and the weather conditions Ireland has to offer.

John filled us in on some of the recent projects which have been completed by his company, while also pointing out some of the more recent ones they’ve specialised in.
“We finished a big job in Waterford Distillery recently. We done one last year and then one the year after that,” he said.
“We do a lot of grain storage work and do a good few GAA centres as well. We’d be doing a lot of work with farmers in expanding milking parlours and stuff like that.”
