2021 sees Crannog Roofing of County Meath celebrate the milestone of 20 years in business and Director David Callaghan tells Building Ireland they are not content to rest on their laurels as they target further expansion in the future.
David Callaghan and Niall O’Regan joined forces back in 2001 to set up Crannog Roofing and it’s no exaggeration to say that the company has come a long way since then. In fact, David freely admitted that the company’s rapid rise into one of the country’s leading roofing contractors has exceeded their initial expectations.
“We’ve been very fortunate in that the growth has practically always moved in the right direction,” he remarked. “Okay, the downturn came and there was a decline but since then, over the last number of years, in particular, we have experienced very positive growth.”
Fast forward 20 years and today Crannog Roofing service Dublin and the surrounding areas with complete roofing and cladding solutions.
They recently expanded their services to include a complete non-combustible roof & cladding build up which will carry substantial warranties to ensure their clients have peace of mind on any projects they undertake.
A flexible approach and ability to diversify have been central to the company’s success to date. Their work range and scope varies largely and they boast a proven track record in adapting accordingly to client needs.
“We would have started out more as carpentry contractors but evolved into different areas, such as roofing,” David pointed out, “so there has been constant evolvement over the last 20 years and, more recently, we invested heavily in the expansion of warehousing for our secondary company, Crannog Fibreglass which supplies Fibreglass roofing to the market.”
The size of the workforce has grown in tandem with the demand for the company’s services and there are currently approximately 35-40 highly skilled people on the payroll who all have a key role to play in ensuring that Crannog Roofing delivers on its commitment to its clients.
The directors have successfully cultivated mutually beneficial arrangements with some of the biggest names in the Irish construction sector and they count the likes of Glenveagh, Sisk, Cairn Homes, John Paul Construction, PJ Hegarty, Tusker, Midland Construction, Kealy Construction, Castlethorn, Glenbrier, Dublin Loft company, Mythen Construction and JJR Rhatigan amongst their valued list of clients.
A project that stands out for David was the Marianella in Rathgar, an apartment development they worked on with Cairn Homes and completed back in August 2018.
“That was a flagship job that generated more business,” he recalled, “and our relationships with our clients over the last number of years have been excellent.
“We have recently finished a conservation project at 19-22 Kildare Street on behalf of John Paul Construction which included restoring Roofs that were refurbished for the first time since the 1800s, Our project team really excelled in guiding this building back to life, we are currently working on a project at Walford Shrewsbury Road for Tusker which will be a flagship project for 2021.
“Other live projects at the moment include Conservation roof at Tropical Fruit building at Hanover Quay for PJ Hegarty, Non-combustible cladding of eight apartment blocks for Cairn Homes at Griffith Wood Griffith Avenue, Copper Cladding at Charlemont Square for Rhatigans and full roof build-up of single ply membrane at Irishtown Stadium with Kealy Construction, Copper Cladding to Arklow Shipping Bay with Mythen Construction, full paralon warm deck roof system with metal façade for Castlethorn to 200 units at St Josephs in Clonsilla, while we recently completed Florentine Shopping Centre in Bray for Glenbrier Construction.”

Looking ahead to the future, David was optimistic that the company’s graph will continue on an upward trajectory.
“Definitely, with the lockdowns over the last while, we see projects for tender/negotiated and ready to go and the feedback we’re getting from levels and layers above us is that the construction industry is in a good place for the next 24 to 36 months.
“We’re a vibrant company among the construction industry, even with the problems that Covid has brought, we feel our company is in a good place. Construction in general now is a lot better than it was 10 years ago as regards security and working for certain client/contractors. I feel it’s a lot more stable and there are good opportunity out there for people that are ambitious and are willing to work hard.”
