MGM Construction celebrates 25 years

3 Jul , 2024

Celebrating 25 years in business, MGM Construction Ltd is a multi-disciplined building contracting firm serving the South-East region and beyond.

Based in Kilkenny, MGM Construction has successfully completed numerous projects across a range of sectors, including commercial, retail, industrial and high-end residential. The company has been synonymous with quality workmanship since 1999 when it was set up by Martin Murphy. Martin was joined by co-director Nicky Maher in 2015 and they employ 15 people directly, who are supported and supplemented by the same tried and trusted subcontractors.

The contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from design teams and satisfied clients.

“We’re a well-established company with a good credit history,” Martin says.

“We pride ourselves on quality and our ability to exceed expectations, whilst building long-lasting relationships. Attention to detail, value-for-money, Health & Safety and a commitment to working closely with our clients to deliver total satisfaction are always our priority.

“We work closely with our suppliers, who include the Grafton Group and Roadstone, to take the sting out of the price increases the industry has experienced since Covid-19. We are also lucky to have a fantastic team and subcontractors who have been very loyal to us. The top-class work they deliver reflects well on our business.”

He adds: “We have collaborated with many different architects, engineers and clients over the years, and in many cases, have carried out repeat work for them. Our goal is to tailor each individual project to our clients’ exact requirements. This leads to a unique and bespoke product, while using the most up-to-date methods of construction, and superior building products and materials.”

According to Martin, MGM Construction adopted a “multi-spoked approach” during the recession which it has stuck rigidly to.

“It has stood us in good stead. We never pigeonhole ourselves into one specific area,” he points out.

“You have to be adaptable and be willing to move with the times. Our people can turn their hands to anything, and the same goes for Nicky and I. We’re both carpenters by trade. We’ve evolved over the years to offer a one-stop shop service. From office fitouts to conservation, we don’t shy away from anything. We tick all the boxes.”

Retail and office space fitouts account for a large part of MGM Construction’s commercial work. The company has a proven track record in the fitout and refurbishment of shops, offices, service stations and forecourts for clients such as Musgraves (SuperValu and Centra), BWG (Spar, Eurospar, Mace, Londis and XL), Inver Petroleum, O’Briens Irish Sandwich Bars, McDonald’s, Ladbrokes Ireland, Kilkenny County Council, JJ Kavanagh, Tirlán, UPMC, University Hospital Waterford and Amber Women’s Refuge.

“Our ability to work in ‘live’ environments means businesses can continue to trade as normal while we’re onsite. We provide a complete turnkey fitout and refurbishment service which enables us to attract repeat business time and again. We get a lot of maintenance work on the back of completing projects for clients,” the affable Kilkenny man explains.

DAF Trucks Ireland, Breedon Group, McCarthy Commercials and JJ Kavanagh are just some of MGM Construction’s valued industrial clients. The Kilkenny contractor is currently building new offices and a maintenance facility for JJ Kavanagh at its bus depot in Ballygunner, Waterford, while it recently completed a Centra shop fitout in Knocktopher, Co. Kilkenny.

High-end one-off residential developments are another speciality for the company which is a CIF and CIRI member.

“We used to deliver social housing projects for local authorities and housing bodies, but our focus is now on building high-end bespoke one-off ICF houses using the Thermohouse system. We trialled our first ICF build in 2020 and were so happy with it that we’ve fully embraced it,” Martin adds.

“With ICF construction, you can build better, more comfortable and energy efficient homes faster. An ICF-built home is the nearest thing to passive. It’s less labour intensive which is a big plus at a time when there’s a labour shortage. Price and wage inflation are the other big challenges facing the industry, but if you run a good business and a tight ship, there’s work out there if you want it.”

Both Martin and Nicky have a wealth of experience in the building trade and are renowned for their hands-on approach and can-do attitude. Rest assured that whatever your project, you’re in safe hands with MGM Construcion’s expert team of builders, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, plasterers and architectural designers.

The co-directors would like to take this opportunity to thank their customers, suppliers and design teams for their continued support as well as their crew of direct employees and subcontractors for their hard work and expertise.
