The construction industry is built on trust and reliability. Once a contractor is able to provide the latter, the former will grow amongst clients and thus a business relationship is developed.
Established in 1952, Daytona Contractors Ltd T/A Pat O’Sullivan & Sons has certainly built the trust and reliability amongst their customer base.
Pat O’Sullivan established the business and these days his son Pat Jnr and his wife Carol run the day to day operations of the company, while ensuring they meet the same standards that the original founder set out from the start.
“We are based in Clonakilty, Co Cork and offer services in new build, restoration, re-roofing, shop fronts, heritage works, domestic houses, industrial, commercial, church buildings and refurbishments,” said Pat.
To ensure that all this work is carried out to the highest standard possible, the company employ a team of 16, many of who have been with them years, while tried and trusted sub-contractors are also valuable members of the team.
“We employ a dedicated team of professionals to ensure that our clients needs are met and expectations exceeded. We have lads with us years, in the last couple of years, a few lads like Mike Deasy and Tim Cullinane retired after being with the company for 46 and 42 years respectively.
“Our team are committed to the highest levels of quality, safety and environmental performance and pride ourselves on our standards and record.
“We are committed to conducting our operations in an environmentally responsible manner. This enables us to achieve and demonstrate our environmental performance by minimising the negative impact of our operations, whilst maximising the potential for environmental improvement. We seek to work collaboratively with our customers, partners and supply chain to achieve environmentally sustainable solutions.”
Safety is a value that is fundamental to every operation at the company and they are fully committed to a process of demonstrable, continuous improvement in the pursuit of health and safety excellence. Robust systems and controls enable them to proactively manage their health and safety activity with the aim of achieving zero accidents.
“We place a strong emphasis on performance, quality, safety, teamwork and a “hands-on” management approach to ensure client satisfaction.”
Of course, none of the success of the business would be achieved without a loyal customer base with Pat O’Sullivan being involved in many prestigious projects down through the years including the Garda Divisional Headquarters in Bandon, restoration work in Georgian houses, Churches and Convents.
“Many of our customers would be with us for years and we’re delighted that they keep coming back to us when they need something done. Our experience in many fields has helped us gain some prestigious projects down through the years.”
Pat revealed that there has been an increase in work in Cork over the past couple of years and they have projects ongoing in Clonakilty, Castletownbere, Youghal and Cork city.
“We are pleased with the way business is going. We are busy at the moment and have a good bit of work ahead of us, which is great. We are always tendering for more work as you can’t rest on your laurels in this industry, but we feel that we are supplying an excellent standard of work to our customers and they are happy with that.”
Stressing that quality is a major focus for everyone in the business, Pat states that they are driven to produce the highest standard of work possible.
“We have a reputation for delivering quality projects within budget and to high quality of workmanship. The firm always guarantees a high standard of workmanship and we pride ourselves on delivering on time.
We deliver a wide range of projects from the small residential to large construction projects. No job is too big or small for us. We pride ourselves on delivering high quality work to the clients needs.”
The longevity of the company has seen them experience many highs and lows in the construction industry and while a number of businesses in the sector have come and gone, Pat O’Sullivan & Sons is still going strong.
“We have been through a few recessions. I started working as a block layer in the 1980s, so I would have seen a couple myself. During the late eighties, there was over 100 people here, but that was scaled back to what we have today.
“You definitely learn a lot from a recession and our focus now is keeping things tight and not getting too big. We are happy with the workload that we have and being a medium sized company means that I can deal with all the customers on a personal level. We are always only a phone call away. We have a superb track record and testimonials from all our customers on our work.
Here are a couple of testimonials from satisfied customers:
Michael and Jane Newman, Burren House – Kilbrittain
We contracted Pat O’ Sullivan and Sons as the prime contractor for the complete restoration of Burren House, Killbrittain. The company was responsible for all the works including landscaping and construction of a land made lake. All subcontract works and skills were sourced within 30 miles radius of Burren House. The clients were completely satisfied with the entire project. It was on time and budget. There was not one single disagreement and the quality of work was of the highest standard. We have nothing but praise for Patrick O’ Sullivan and his team who worked here for two years. I would recommend them to any prospective client.
John and Barbara Nugent, Youghalls, Clonakilty
Pat O’ Sullivan and Sons built my parents house more than 30 years ago with the highest standards of workmanship and quality. It was my turn to build in 2004. The same commitment was given to us and delivered to a standard second to none.
