For the past 21 years, T&D Doherty Construction has been supplying a top class service to an ever-increasing customer base and for this month’s edition of Building Ireland, we profile the family run business.
Tommy Doherty and his son Derek established the business back in 1999. Tommy brought a wealth of experience to the company, which he has passed on to his son down through the years.
Specialising in new builds, extensions and renovations in the residential sector, the Doherty’s’ also carry out a lot of work for the Donegal County Council, which combined has resulted in them being kept very busy indeed.
“We have a number of projects ongoing at the moment. We have been very busy since we returned from the first lockdown earlier in the year. The majority of our work would be carried out in the surrounding area and we would do some work in Derry,” said Derek.
T&D Doherty Construction offer a turnkey service and can work from a greenfield site to handing over the keys of the customers’ new home.
T&D Doherty Construction has grown significantly to increase its expertise and experience to its present capability spanning various construction disciplines. “Word of mouth would be our best form of advertisement, so the aim is always to finish a job to the highest standard possible, that is something that we have always focused on.”

“There would be a lot of repeat customers on our books, people who would be happy for us to do other jobs for them and that is probably the best recommendation that we could get. We have found social media to be very useful for advertising as well, while we also have a company website.”
Based just outside Buncrana, Co Donegal, the firm is customer-driven at all times. It is with the client in mind – everything from what their requirements are to their agreed specifications and budget – that T&D Doherty commits to working together as a team with the client and design personnel.
“There are a good group of lads here. There are five employed direct and then we would use experienced subcontractors as well. Most of the employees would be with us a good few years and they are experienced at what they do.
“The same can be said about the sub-contractors who know what we expect of them and they haven’t let us down. A lot of them have worked with us for more than ten years while we have been using some of the same block layers for over 20-years. It is important to have that bit of experience behind you and know that you can leave a lad at a job and know that it will be done right.”

“There’s definitely a strict time frame with these projects and the idea is to get the project started as soon as possible and completed within the agreed time-frame whilst ensuring that the work completed is to very high standards.”
The company’s track record makes for good reading too, with hundreds of jobs being carried out to excellent standards down through the years.
At the moment, they have four new builds in the construction stage, while they also have a number of renovation jobs ongoing, one of which is a refurbishment work on a listed building in Buncrana.
Derek added that there is currently plenty of work on offer, but he’s aware of the difficulties that Covid has brought for families wishing to build new homes.
“We are delighted with the workload that we have on at the moment, there is no doubt about that. We are very busy for the next few months. In regards to the future, it is hard to know what will happen. The banks are waiting before releasing funds to families who have seen their income effected by Covid and that could see a slowdown in the near future, but for the time being, everything is going very well.”
