As the name suggests, Excel Roofing Systems is an excellent roofing and cladding contractor delivering high-quality solutions on a host of notable clients and projects nationwide. We dropped into their Navan, County Meath base to find out more about this exceptional operation from founder / proprietor Jonathan Crowe.
Excel Roofing Systems is a relatively new business but it has come a long way since it was established by former Cavan footballer Jonathan Crowe and his wife Sinead two years ago, in September 2014. As a leading roofing and cladding contractor providing flat roofing and cladding systems to the built environment, Excel has harnessed 30 years of roofing and cladding experience to quickly establish a strong reputation for reliability, consistency and quality in all products and services provided.
Clients are afforded bespoke roofing (Flat Roofing Systems including Single Ply Membrane, Bitumen Felt, Liquid Applied, Hot Melt and Green Roofing Systems) and cladding (Excel Roofing supplies Kingspan, Euroclad and Tegral roof and wall cladding) solutions tailored to precise projects requirements, including new builds and refurbs for the commercial, industrial and domestic markets.
Cladding systems installed include composite panel roofing and cladding; traditional metal roofing and cladding; standing seam roof cladding; and rain screen cladding.
In keeping with the ethos of a family-run business, a professional, personal service is guaranteed and Jonathan makes himself available to all clients at all times.
The team at Excel Roofing Systems works closely with clients, design teams, specifiers and building contractors to provide the best option for each project. Working closely with project surveyors to ensure client budgets can be met while not compromising on quality, they can provide written specifications and detail shop drawings for each individual project.
Excel Roofing Systems can also carry out all types of roof maintenance on existing properties, including conducting surveys and generating professional reports.
Founder Jonathan Crowe graduated from GMIT with a Degree in Construction Management in 2004. His career in construction saw him become more and more involved in roofing and cladding and that was what he was specialising in for six years before taking the leap and setting up his own business.
The fact that he made the brave decision to set up a company in the construction sector at the tail-end of a recession underlines the confidence the Cavan man had in his capacity to provide unrivalled solutions: “From the feedback I got from working with clients and with builders, I could see that there was an upturn again and this was something I always wanted to do,” the Crosserlough GAA stalwart reflects.
Excel Roofing Systems was born and outstanding roofing systems were soon being installed across a large catchment area from Dublin to Cavan and throughout the midlands and Leinster. “I started off with domestic work and some small roofing projects and built up good working relationships with a few building contractors. We have a nice client base now and generate a high percentage of repeat business.”
Most of the work these days is commercial, including a good mix of schools, hospitals, care units, retail units etc. At the time of writing, Excel Roofing Systems’ expertise was being applied to Crannog Nua – a HSE Special Care Unit in Portrane, Dublin – for Duggan Brothers as well as work at St James Hospital for Clancy. In 2015, a 1,000 square metre Kingspan Topdeck Panel Roof System was installed on Blessington Primary Care Centre. Excel has also applied a Tegral Shadowline Cladding system to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar for John Sisk & Sons.
By using the very best materials in all their roofing and cladding systems, Excel Roofing can guarantee optimal performance and absolute client satisfaction. “Quality is where you need to go and it’s absolutely essential that you use the right suppliers,” Jonathan notes. “We use Kingspan, Tegral, and Euroclad for our cladding systems. Soprema, Moy Material and IKO provide us with our flat roofing materials and we also provide various rainscreen systems through SIG Ireland.”
Approximately 90% of the work completed is on new builds and Excel Roofing provides gainful employment to a team of 15 professionals, including twelve fitters and a contracts manager. Looking to the future, Jonathan says his priority is to maintain the high standards for which his company has become synonymous:
“It’s all about having that core group of products that we use and making sure that we are one of the best in the country – if not the best – and that we always leave an excellent job behind us. To ensure that we meet client expectations, we get in at an early stage in the project and look at budgets and come up with a drafting service and designs to suit their needs and then work with them on that. You are in constant communication with the subcontractor so that everybody knows exactly what is going on.
“We give builders a detailed programme of when we are going to do our work and we stick to that. All the latest safety procedures are implemented and we are fully-certified. Every project is delivered on time and to programme – that’s an absolute minimum requirement.
“We are members of the National Guild of Master Craftsmen and are fully geared towards all the latest regulations, providing fully-warrantied systems from reputable suppliers,” Jonathan concludes. “Demand is strong and the construction industry does seem to be expanding again. I believe there is scope there for further growth of the business and would hope to double my workforce within the next five years, all things going well.”
They’ve certainly gone well for Excel Roofing Systems so far and all the indications suggest that they should continue to do so. This success story is further proof that, if you insist on quality, everything else will fall into place.
