Coming up on 20 years in business, M&N Civils Ltd is a leading groundworks and civil engineering company which has been shortlisted for an Irish Construction Award in the ‘Specialist or Specialist Services Contract – €1m to €2m’ category for carrying out the bulk excavation works at Irish Life’s new flagship office development in Dublin 2.
Due for completion later this year, ‘Cadenza’ on Earlsfort Terrace is a striking new commercial development which comprises six storeys above a lower ground floor and a single level basement. Constructed with an RC concrete frame using post-tensioned slabs, the façade is a bespoke structural glass wall with an external tapered stone veil. The development involved the demolition of existing buildings on site and the construction of a 140,000 sq. ft. Grade A office building. The building is targeting a LEED Platinum and WELL rating, with an early client access for fitout three months prior to handover.
Walls Construction are the main contractors on the project which required M&N Civils to work to a very challenging Environmental Report while adhering to a very Time Sensitive Programme. As with every project it undertakes, M&N Civils went the extra mile to ensure the programme was achieved while never compromising on quality, safety or environmental considerations. The company provides an experienced and knowledgeable service that is built on communication with its clients and working together to solve problems, and achieve a positive and compliant project for all parties.
The Irish Construction Excellence Awards (ICE Awards) are the original and premier recognition of performance excellence for the contracting sector in Ireland, and provide an opportunity for the industry to showcase and reward best practice across the full range of construction disciplines and project categories. The nomination is a tremendous honour for M&N Civils which is based on Greenhills Road, Dublin 12 and employs 150 people.
“It’s great recognition for our entire team,” says M&N Civils contracts manager Danny Kennedy.
“We enjoyed an excellent working relationship with Walls on this project. The architect was Henry J Lyons and the engineers were Waterman Moylan and Arup. It was a project we were delighted to be associated with.”
M&N Civils is currently collaborating with PJ Hegarty & Sons, John Paul Construction, Purcell Construction, Glenveagh Homes and John Sisk & Son on other large projects for Dublin City Council, Ronan Group Real Estate and Amazon.
“We’re extremely busy,” Danny explains.
“Our biggest job at the moment involves the excavation and removal of 135,000m3 of muck for PJ Hegarty & Sons from the site of the new Citibank European HQ at Waterfront South Central in Dublin’s North Docklands, which is being developed by Ronan Group Real Estate.
“We are also working alongside Purcell Construction on the North City Operations Depot for Dublin County Council and with John Paul Construction on a data centre for a confidential client. We’ve just finished DUB 68 /78 for PJ Hegarty & Sons which are two new data centres with a combined footprint of 50,000m2.
“The project involved the site strip and disposal of 50,000m3 inert material offsite and excavation of substructures consisting of pad and strip foundations of 18,000m3. We also installed 44km of ducting and completed the roads, paths and paving around the new data centres.
“Furthermore, we worked alongside Ronan Group on Facebook’s new European HQ in Ballsbridge and John Paul Construction on Amazon’s new Mulhuddart campus. We are also working with Glenveagh Homes on a large residential development in Kildare town.”
M&N Civils was founded in February 2004 by current managing director Manus McGarvey. Since then, it has been engaged in some of the biggest projects in Ireland, ranging from large data centres, commercial offices and retail projects, private and public residential housing and a number of large infrastructure projects.
The groundworks specialist prides itself on being a reliable and trustworthy company, with a reputation for completing every job to the highest standards. It strives to achieve the highest level of customer satisfaction and build long-term business relationships. M&N Civils places a strong emphasis on safety, performance, quality, teamwork and a ‘hands-on’ management approach to achieve complete client satisfaction.
While most of its work is concentrated in the greater Dublin area, M&N Civils provides a nationwide service in civil engineering, plant hire, rock breaking, pipe and duct laying, water mains, foundations, ESB contracts, kerbing, concreting, shuttering, steel fixing, paths and paving.
M&N Civils has an array of machinery to cater for any size of bulk excavation.
“We have 50-tonne excavators down to 2.7 tonnes. Our dumpers range from 3 to 20 tonnes. All of our excavators and bulldozers are GPS guided. We also run 25 trucks and have three full-time fitters in the workshop to ensure everything runs smoothly and that downtime is kept to a minimum.”
The company’s core principles are to work closely with its client / contractor which it believes is crucial to a successful outcome. As with any large project, you need to be sure that you choose the right contractor. And when it comes to civil engineering, site development, groundworks and plant hire, M&N Civils won’t be beaten.
