The civil and groundworks experts

31 Aug , 2023

Established in December 2018 by Ger Collier and Karl Burke, CB Building & Civil Engineering Ltd has grown exponentially by delivering a wide range of civil engineering and construction services across Leinster.

The Gorey, Co. Wexford-based company specialises in all aspects of civil and groundworks, including deep drainage, concrete works, electro fusion watermain welding, hard and soft landscaping, services, road construction and general building. While CB Building & Civil Engineering is a relatively new business, its directors boast a wealth of experience in the civil and building sectors. Ger Collier has been running plant for most of his life, while Karl Burke is a civil engineer by profession.

“Between the two of us, there’s not much we don’t know about the business,” Karl says.

“Ger has years of experience with machinery and men. I’ve been in this game for a long time as well. But we’re still learning all the time. The willingness to learn and to invest in new technology and our people has been key to our growth to date.”

Also central to the contractor’s success has been the strong relationships it has forged with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, engineers and consultants. Clients know that whatever the scale or scope of the project, CB Building & Civil Engineering can provide a professional, efficient, reliable and value-for-money service. The company has earned a stellar reputation for top-quality work that is delivered on time and within budget, and to the client’s exact specifications.

CB Building & Civil Engineering’s team of highly-skilled operatives are supported by the same tried and trusted subcontractors. These include Avondale Landscapes, Keith Lawless Paving, Abbeylawn Fencing, Carroll Quarries, TKM Concrete Services and Cathal Daly Slipform Kerbing. The company places a strong emphasis on Health & Safety and is fully committed to maintaining a safe working environment for all employees and personnels involved in each project.

“We’re a one-stop shop for all your civil and groundworks needs,” Karl continues.

“We can do everything from site digs, tank installations, water mains, ducting and drainage works to finishing pavements and landscaping. We have staff trained up in electro fusion watermain welding which is another string to our bow. All of our work is secured through word of mouth and recommendations from satisfied customers.”

CB Building & Civil Engineering has an array of plant and equipment to cater for any civil groundworks project, including excavators, bulldozers, dump trucks, rollers, compressors and compaction equipment.

“We have a range of machinery from three to 35 tonnes for all aspects of our work. We also run dumpers, rollers and dozers along with a truck and a low loader. We buy our plant and machinery from ECI JCB and they also look after our servicing and maintenance requirements. We recently bought two machines with tilt rotating buckets which allows for digging at different angles. By investing in the latest technology, we’re able to provide our customers with a more efficient service,” Karl explains.

For the past 18 months, the Co. Wexford company has been engaged in three different residential developments in Portlaoise – two for Hollybrook Homes and one for Aston Homes. The Hollybrook Homes projects are Foxborrow and Mount Stewart, while the Aston Homes development is called Ashewood Walk.

“We’ve carried out the civil and infrastructure works on the three projects. We’re close to completing works on Phase 3 of Foxburrow which is a medium-sized development of 14 detached and semi-detached homes in a mature residential location adjacent to Portlaoise town centre. We look after all the site works before handover to the timber frame contractors, and return later to finish off the pavements and landscaping.

“We’ve enjoyed an excellent working relationship with Hollybrook Homes and Aston Homes along with all the people we’ve dealt with on their sites. And the same goes for all of our customers across Dublin and Leinster.”

Phase 2 of Foxburrow was recently shortlisted for an Irish Construction Excellence Award in the ‘Residential – Private up to €50 million’ category. Completed between April 2022 and January 2023 to a high-level finish throughout, the 16-unit development has been well received by the neighbours and even more so by the new residents.

The Phase 2 houses comprise four bedrooms (one with ensuite), kitchen with integrated appliances, large central island and pantry press, utility room with space for washer and dryer, living room and downstairs guest WC. The kitchens have been finished with a modern colour palette, a stone top, soft close doors and drawers, under cabinet lighting and top-of-the-range appliances.

The bathrooms were designed with a flexible living arrangement in mind. There is an area in each room that can accommodate a desk, thereby incorporating a more modern approach to working from home, yet still maintaining contemporary interior finishes. Hollybrook’s specification also includes a number of finishes not provided by competitors in nearby developments such as appliances, floor finishes and wardrobes. This also sets it apart.

As CB Building & Civil Engineering continues to go from strength to strength, Karl and Ger would like to take this opportunity to thank their clients and suppliers for their support as well as their employees and subcontractors for their hard work, dedication and expertise.
