Opus Construction Ltd is a well-established building contractor specialising in commercial capital projects in the Cork area. Founded 13 years ago by Brian Nolan and John Guiney, the company has earned a glowing reputation for top-quality construction.
Both hailing from carpentry backgrounds, Brian and John first worked together on the Cork Courthouse in Washington Street in 2004. They decided to combine their wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise seven years later to create a company that offers unique solutions with a strong focus on craftsmanship and design.
The small, but dedicated Opus team is supported by the same tried and trusted subcontractors on virtually every job. These include Haven Electrical, David O’Leary Plumbing, Ger Donegan Mechanical & Plumbing, Décor Painting, Unique Fitouts, Ram Point Construction, Munster Scaffolding and Keith Lim Plastering. Suppliers include Munster Joinery and Energlaze.
Superior workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of Opus Construction. Health & Safety is at the core of the business, and never more so than since the Covid-19 pandemic. From concept to completion, Brian and John are with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.
Opus’ one-stop shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The Cork contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from designers and satisfied clients.
By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with design teams from Henry J Lyons Architects, DL Group Consulting Engineers, Horizon Engineers and Meitheal Architects to name but a few, and using only the very best building products, this fully insured contractor is able to deliver the highest quality construction to its clients.
“I’m a cabinet maker by trade and John is a site carpenter,” Brian Nolan starts off by saying.
“We specialise in fitout and refurbishment projects. We’re a design-focused contractor operating mostly within the commercial sector. We also do a small bit of residential work such as extensions and kitchens.
“Everything we do is led on from the fitout. We work closely with the fitout people and architects to make sure the job is done right. We can do everything from the RC walls to the finished carpentry. We help the client to select the right contractor and finish. It’s a complete turnkey service.”
Opus Construction’s commercial projects are typically valued at under €2 million. “We take on the jobs that are too big for the small guys and too small for the big guys,” Brian explains.
“We have a small crew that can take on the bigger jobs for less expense. I assume the role of project supervisor at the construction stage and put myself in the position of the client and what they are looking for. The look, feel, colour, drama… all these things are factored in.”
The 4-star Montenotte Hotel, which is one of Cork’s most iconic and popular hotels, has become a home-from-home for the Opus team in recent times. “We’ve done a lot of work in the Montenotte Hotel over the past three years. We enjoy an excellent working relationship with them and are nearly part of the furniture there at this stage,” the affable co-director jokingly remarks.
“We’ve revamped the Motion Health Club leisure centre twice. We first gave the locker rooms / shower rooms and gym floor area a makeover and then redid the shower rooms in a different style and redressed the swimming pool. During Covid, we renovated and extended the kitchen, and also enclosed the apartments.
“In addition, we designed and installed a custom-built zinc line archway and converted seven two-bed apartments into 14 one-bed self-catering apartments in conjunction with Meitheal Architects. We also upgraded 30 bathrooms and bedrooms, fitting them out with new wardrobes, raised the staircase panelling and recently revamped the Panorama Terrace. We’re currently collaborating with Henry J Lyons on an extension to the staff canteen at the hotel.”
Brian continues: “Outside of the hotel sphere, we undertake complex residential projects such as an orangery for a client in Bandon. The orangery was supplied by Hampton Conservatories in Portrush, Co. Antrim. So our work is wide and varied. No two jobs are the same.”
Opus Construction has also successfully completed refurbishment / fitout projects for a number of restaurants, including BowesRyan in Limerick, The Green Frog Café near UCC, Son of a Bun in Cork’s MacCurtain Street and Sliced at four of their outlets across Cork. Other standout projects include refurbishment works to the leisure centre and jacuzzi at the then Clarion Hotel (now 4-star Clayton Hotel) in Cork, and to the Ferrero Ireland staff canteen on Kinsale Road, Cork.
As Opus Construction continues to go from strength to strength, Brian and John would like to take this opportunity to thank their clients and suppliers for their support as well as their staff and subcontractors for their hard work, dedication and skill.
