DJ Cahill Construction Ltd is an exceptional building company in Charleville, Co. Cork specialising in educational, social housing and residential projects. Owner David Cahill explains more.
Construction has been a way of life for David since he was eight years old when his late father Dan brought him to his first building site. Fast-forward 50 years and David is proudly upholding the family tradition in the guise of DJ Cahill Construction Ltd. It was established in 2007 and evolved from his father’s company, DJ Cahill & Son.
“I wanted to keep the same name after my father retired,” David says.
“He had a great reputation in the business and I learned nearly everything I know from him. I have been around sites for as long as I can remember. I have been working full-time in the trade since I was 15 or 16. The knowledge and experience I have acquired in that time continues to serve me well. You could say that building is in my blood.”

“We’ve been working for Cork County Council for 40 years. That speaks volumes. We have many other long-standing customers, suppliers and subcontractors. Donie and Paddy Ring of Munster Joinery were supplying and fitting windows for my father 35-40 years ago and they’re now a huge, multinational company,” the affable builder continues.
David and his three full-time employees are supported by the same tried and trusted subcontractors, including John G McSweeney Plumbing Contractor in Mallow, Eugene Finn Electrical Contractor in Kanturk and Frank McNee Plumbing Contractor in Kanturk. His suppliers include Alu-Fit in Kanturk, Office Assist in Charleville, General Hardware Supplies in Newcastle West, Burton’s Topline in Kanturk, O’Shea’s Topline Hardware in Charleville, JMR Tiles in Mallow and Sheedy Insulation in Duagh, Co. Kerry.
School extensions, general maintenance on Cork County Council’s housing stock – including heating and plumbing, insulation and roofing upgrades – new residential builds and sewage treatment plants for the local authority, schools and private customers are the company’s ‘bread and butter’. David and his crew are currently carrying out extensions to Freemount and Bweeng National Schools. The extension to Freemount National School consists of a new classroom, an assisted user toilet and a new corridor, while the Bweeng National School extension comprises a classroom, SET room, assisted WC / shower room and all associated works. The contractor is also undertaking boiler upgrades in other local schools.
“We’ve been doing school extensions for over 15 years. Our first one was in Charleville. We carried out an extension to Newmarket Girls’ National School shortly after that and on the day of the official opening, I shook hands with six principals whose schools we’ve worked on,” David explains.
The Cahill name has been associated with many prestigious projects in the locality. These include Charleville Golf Club extension, the conversion of the former Church of Ireland parish church on Main Street, Charleville into a public library and the development of the Charleville Sheltered Housing Services building.
“I went 140ft up the spire of the old Protestant Church in Charleville which was daunting to say the least! We were also delighted to collaborate with Sr Celestine on the Charleville semi-shelter that was officially opened by the then President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, in the 1990s,” David recalls.
While the sector remains buoyant, rising material and fuel costs continue to loom large.
“The cost of diesel is having a knockout effect. Even the cost of petrol is having an effect because we run our generators on it.”
