A Suir thing

22 Dec , 2025

Established in 2007, Suirside Construction Ltd has grown to become a recognised main contractor in the south-east after completing projects of all sizes and complexity in the public, private, commercial and pharmaceutical sectors.

The Waterford-based company was founded by Ned Doherty who is now partnered by his son Eddie. It became a limited company 12 years ago and has over 40 direct employees comprising site managers, quantity surveyors, administration staff, tradespeople and labourers. These are supported by the same tried and trusted subcontractors, including Sean Moroney Electrical, Ollie McPhillips Building Energy Services, Colm Kehoe Plastering, Lynch Roofing, Sincon Engineering and Murphy & Kelly (Thomastown).

The company’s senior management takes a hands-on approach to help clients realise their dreams of building a world-class structure that can compete with the best in the construction industry. The client is at the centre of each project which leads to many long-term relationships being forged. Suirside Construction prides itself on not only meeting client expectations, but exceeding them.

Superior workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of the family-run operation. Health & Safety is at the core of the business. From concept to completion, the Suirside team is with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.

Whether your next project is a new build, extension or fitout, Suirside Construction’s one-stop shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The Waterford contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from design teams and scores of satisfied clients.

By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with its engineers and architects, and using only the very best building products, this fully insured contractor is able to deliver the highest quality construction to its clients. Suirside Construction is a member of the CIF and CIRI, and is also Safe-T-Cert accredited.

“We are proud of our reputation for delivering projects of the highest standard,” Eddie Doherty says.

“In doing so, we place a strong emphasis on safety and staff training. Our tradespeople are fully qualified and we encourage their further education to ensure their skills are always up-to-date. The sectors we are involved in are commercial, residential, pharmaceutical, educational, sports and leisure, conservation, civil works, joinery and fitouts.

“We’ve undertaken numerous school projects and have a wealth of experience in cleanroom environments. We’re very hands-on when it comes to the pharma sector and have carried out a variety of work for the likes of Bausch & Lomb, West Pharma, Eirgen Pharma and Horizon Therapeutics in the recent past.

“Our main pharma client at the moment is Sanofi who we’re carrying out a firewater retention project for. This critical project involves the construction of a new concrete bunded area designed to safely retain firewater in the event of a chemical incident. We also completed a deep freeze extension and chemical storage area works at their plant in the last 12 months.”

Suirside Construction recently completed a number of educational projects in the south-east, including a two-storey modular extension with paved areas and additional vehicle access at St Declan’s National School in Kilmacthomas and a four-classroom extension with universal access toilet, staircase and lift at St Stephen’s National School in Waterford City. The contractor has also successfully undertaken school projects at St Mary’s CBS in Carrick-on-Suir, De La Salle in Waterford City and St Laserian’s Special School in Carlow.

One of Suirside Construction’s most high-profile projects was Phase 1 of the redevelopment of Walsh Park, the home of Waterford GAA. This consisted of a new, uncovered seated stand on the northern terrace and the refurbishment of the existing southern stand. Phase 2, which the company is also expected to tender for, will see the construction of a covered 1,300-seated stand, along with new dressing-rooms and an administration building. The third and final phase will see improvement works carried out to the city end terrace.

Other recently completed projects include upgrade works to Quest’s office in City Gate, Mahon, Co. Cork, office fitout works for Leo Lynch Construction and the construction of 10 two-bedroom sheltered housing units for Respond Housing in Wadding Manor, Ferrybank.

Social housing is a growing area for Suirside Construction. To this end, its current / recent projects include a 10-unit development of four houses and six apartments at Ozier Park for Waterford County Council, a six-unit development at Dunningstown Road, Kilkenny for Kilkenny County Council, a mixed development of 14 apartments and semi-detached houses at the old Red Barn site in Ballyragget for Kilkenny County Council, and a five-unit development at Barrack Close, Athy for Kildare County Council.

Investigation works at the proposed Norman Visitor Centre in the heart of New Ross represents an interesting and unusual upcoming project for the Suirside team.

“Our role involves working closely with the design team to assess and understand the existing site conditions, including the historic Bank of Ireland and grain store buildings on the Quay,” Eddie explains.

“Scheduled to open in summer 2027, the centre will be a world-class attraction, welcoming up to 100,000 visitors annually. It will bring the story of the Normans to life through interactive exhibits, immersive experiences, and engaging activities like sword fighting and jousting, all while preserving and celebrating the site’s unique heritage.”

Suirside Construction’s main suppliers are McCarthy’s Homevalue, Ballymountain Homevalue, DPL and Treacy’s Hardware. Among the engineers / architects it collaborates with on a regular basis are CJ Falconer & Associates, Frank Fox & Associates, Leonard C Healy & Associates, Fewer Harrington & Partners and Geaney Engineering Consultants.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank our clients, suppliers and design teams for their continued support as well as our staff and sub-contractors for their hard work and expertise,” Eddie concludes.
