Access Industrial Doors is Ireland’s premier industrial and commercial door specialist, offering unrivalled manufacture, supply, service and installation solutions nationwide. We caught up with director Noel Purtell to find out more about this outstanding, 100% Irish-owned operation.
Offering bespoke solutions, Access Industrial Doors is a one-stop shop for the manufacture and installation of steel doors and roller shutters for commercial and industrial premises island-wide – and sometimes further afield.
All doors are designed and manufactured in house and completed to the highest standards (including paint coating and powder finishing), providing security, practicality and aesthetic appeal.
Raw materials are sourced from reputable, market-leading suppliers – including Garog and Klockner RP, to mention just a couple – and the Dublin 17-based company has a stringent policy of never compromising on the quality of its end products, which ensures absolute customer satisfaction at all times.
This is why they can count the likes of Penneys / Primark, Croke Park, Luas, Tesco, Ulster Bank, Bord Gais, Vodafone, BT, Esso, ESB, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Kevin Street Garda Station, Dublin City Council, Dublin County Library and the Irish Aviation Authority amongst their impressive customer base, as well as regularly delivering projects for a who’s who of main contractors, including Sisk, Bennett Construction, Collen Construction, JJ Rhatigan and P Elliott.
In addition to manufacturing premium-quality metal (steel) doors and industrial, commercial and fire-rated roller shutter doors, Access also provides preventative maintenance and 24-hour emergency repair services. They also supply and install a range of associated items sourced from reputable manufacturers – fire curtains, stainless steel turnstiles, rapid action doors, automatic door openers, entrance barriers, etc.
The genesis of Access Industrial Doors dates back to 1999, when the company was established by managing director David McKeon and Gary Byrne. Director Noel Purtell, who joined the company just over a decade ago, reflects: “We all came from a hollow metal doors background and I used to work with David and Gary before re-joining them in 2006/07.
“They actually started off importing doors from Canada but then took the initiative of manufacturing their own certified metal door sets around 2002. The doors are one of only a select few Irish-manufactured, fire-rated metal doors on the market and they are fully-manufactured here in our workshop from start to finish. So people can deal with us directly here at source and there is no need for any third parties or subcontractors to be involved, which makes everything very convenient for the customer.”
Originally operating out of Baldoyle, Access Industrial Doors relocated to a purpose-refurbished, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility – designed and laid out to their exact requirements – in Coolock in 2014. This has enabled the directors to take the business to the next level and full-time employment is currently generated for a skilled, experienced and professional crew of 16 people, comprising manufacturers, installers and office staff.
While the majority of work is carried out within the Republic of Ireland, Access Industrial Doors is the go-to doors contractor for Penneys / Primark and as such installs all their commercial doors and roller shutters across Northern Ireland, mainland UK and indeed Europe.
As Ireland’s leading commercial and industrial door / roller shutter manufacturer, Access works directly for retailers and semi-state bodies as well as through main contractors. They also supply other industrial door companies. “To be honest, we are very picky about who we work with. We will only deal with reputable Irish companies,” continues Noel, who doubles up as financial controller and purchasing manager.
“Penneys / Primark is our biggest customer and they have been extremely loyal to us down the years. Like all of our clients, they get the service they require and there is no compromise on the quality of the product, the workmanship or the service. In retail, we have also installed doors for Lidl, Tesco, Aldi and Dunnes Stores.”
The fact that they manufacture their own products grants Access Industrial Doors a very obvious competitive advantage over the vast majority of their rivals. “Everything is manufactured from scratch and we install all bespoke doors as opposed to stock doors. This means that our doors don’t need any adjustments when they arrive on site and there is no messing about to try to fit them.
“We keep nothing in stock. We go to the site and measure up and then manufacture the door exactly as required. Everything is made to measure in-house with a rapid turnaround – from a sheet of steel into a fully finished product including coloured coating – and installed professionally. With no third parties involved, there is no room for error.
“The process is quite straightforward – one of our contracts managers arranges to get the area measured and the doors are then manufactured. The installation crew then goes to the site and installs the doors. Everything, from start to finish, is handled and managed by our own team – locks, hinges, handles, glazing, etc. The customer is only dealing with one company and can contact us at any stage during the process, or indeed afterwards.
“We can do anything a customer might need, from access-controlled doors to doors with specific insulation or acoustic requirements. We can also source specialist rapid action doors for the food sector and loading bay equipment for warehouses and we manufacture steel profile glazed screens.”
Looking to the future, Noel is confident that Access Industrial Doors will continue to go from strength to strength on the back of providing exceptional products and service to an ever-expanding base of satisfied customers:
“The world is moving more and more towards the eco, low energy and heat efficiency side of things and we’re in the process of conducting significant R&D in this area,” he concludes. “We need to come up with the resources ourselves to carry out these tests. We are very busy with what we are doing and will continue to focus on our existing market and customers.
“It’s worth pointing out that state enterprises, TDs, local enterprise and banks have done nothing for this company. The staff and management have been the only ones responsible for building us up to where we are today; we’ve had no help whatsoever. Our turnover has increased steadily – from €1m to €1.2m to €1.4m – over the past three years – and that has been largely down to the hard work and dedication of our staff.”
