Coming up on 20 years in business, MCK Electrical Ltd in Cork recently celebrated winning the award for Best Owner-Managed / Single Store Electrical Wholesaler at the 2018 National Electrical Awards.
John Kiely and Barry Sheehan of MCK Electrical travelled to the Mansion House in Dublin on May 11 last to receive the prestigious accolade from Nicky Behan of sponsors Precision Cables. The company was formed in 1999 by John Kiely and Dan McCarthy and has since grown to employ 17 staff and become one of the leading independently-owned electrical suppliers in the country.
“We were both surprised and delighted to win the award. It’s great recognition for our company and for what we do. We pride ourselves on our excellent service, quality products and competitive prices,” managing director John says.
Operating from a 20,000 sq. ft. warehouse and offices in Togher Industrial Estate, MCK Electrical stocks all major brands in lighting, wiring accessories, industrial cables, trays and trunking, and domestic and commercial heating. Thanks to a strong relationship with suppliers, this product range continually evolves to meet the needs of customers. The company stocks a range of both workwear and tools and boasts a lighting showroom with a varied range of decorative, outdoor and LED lightings for domestic and industrial lighting solutions. A free design service for LED retrofit upgrades or new installations is also available, making MCK Electrical a one-stop shop for customers.
The quality product range is boosted by a dedicated team of experienced people who are on hand to service every need of the industry. Staff are highly experienced and receive regular training to ensure they are up-to-speed with the latest technology and industry developments.

The affable managing director also believes MCK Electrical has benefited greatly from being a member of the Irish Electrical Buying Group (IEBG). Established in 2000, IEBG has 17 members and 28 branches nationwide. Each member is an independent electrical wholesaler with vast experience in servicing the electrical distribution market in Ireland. Membership of the IEBG enables each branch to offer a large selection of quality products and brands at competitive prices.
“As a member of IEBG, we’re able to buy in bulk and offer our customers a wider choice of products at exceptional prices,” he explains.

“The recession hit business hard, but we’ve bounced back strongly. Things are picking up in Cork – all you have to do is look at the number of hotels and commercial units that are being built around the city at present. The new Pairc Ui Chaoimh was opened last year and that was one of the biggest construction projects ever undertaken in Cork.”
