Celebrating 20 years in business, Axiseng Consulting Engineers is a highly-resourced, independent building services consulting engineering practice which was named as winner of the Professional Consultancy of the Year at the Fit Out Awards 2024.
This prestigious award recognises the expertise, insight, and commitment that drive successful fit-out projects across Ireland and it was a hugely proud night for the firm to be recognised among the best in the industry.
Axiseng Consulting Engineers were also finalists in the 2024 Irish Construction Industry (ICI) Awards where they were shortlisted in the prestigious Engineering Firm of the Year category, Axiseng continues to go from strength to strength by offering a world-class mechanical and electrical engineering service. As responsible professional advisors, the company represents its clients’ best interests in every aspect of its service with advice, designs and lifetime costs tailored to suit the specific mechanical, electrical and environmental needs of each individual project.
One of the largest consultancies of its kind in the country, Axiseng currently employs 49 people at its offices in Mount Street Upper, Dublin 2 and City Gate, Mahon, Cork, which was opened in 2022 to cater for its growing customer-base in the Munster region. All engineering employees are highly experienced and formally qualified.
Projects are led by a chartered engineer with support from specialists in energy management, sustainability and building energy rating. Founded by the late David Corrigan, Axiseng is now led by Cian Dowling, Ray Mason, Rachel McKenna, Bryan Dolan and Gillian Corrigan, who are well-known in the construction industry for their integrity, expertise and project commitment. The five directors are supported by associate directors Eugene Wisely and Ciarán Fagan. The size of the practice allows the directors and associates to maintain a strong personal service throughout the full duration of projects.
Axiseng has earned an enviable reputation for consistently delivering a high-quality service across a broad range of commercial, institutional and industrial developments for its clients who include some of the foremost institutions and eminent professionals in Ireland. The practice’s client portfolio ranges from airlines and banks to local authorities, government bodies such as the HSE, OPW and Department of Education, data centres and major developers such as Kennedy Wilson and Ronan Group Real Estate.
The main services offered by Axiseng are – mechanical, electrical, life safety; energy, sustainability, building simulation and dynamic modelling; acquisition / condition surveys and reporting; specialist services (IT, AV, security and lighting); project management, expert witness; public service utilities coordination; troubleshooting / defects identification; and BIM (Building Information Modelling).
Axiseng can demonstrate in-house expertise in all aspects of building services, with the principals of the company being recognised leaders in the fields of sustainable design, complex air conditioning installations and master-planning major developments. All information produced by its office is presented in clear, concise and unambiguous format. Axiseng’s design packages are fully-detailed, scheduled and coordinated at tender stage, while the client’s interest is protected at every stage of each commission.
Furthermore, the practice’s offices are fully serviced with the latest IT technology and modelling / simulation software.
“We have great employees, clients and industry partners,” Cian Dowling enthuses.
“It’s a real team effort where everyone, from BIM and sustainability engineers to CAD technicians and admin, has a key role to play. We work on multi-faceted projects across all sectors, placing a strong emphasis on clarity. As directors, we are very passionate about engineering. The company is led by engineers, not business-minded people.
“We’re committed to innovation and aren’t afraid to push the boundaries of engineering. We’re always looking at new solutions, particularly in the sustainability space. All of the buildings we design are future-proofed which is important as they may not be built for a number of years.
“Repeat business continues to stand us in good stead. Most of our work comes from existing clients, developers, project managers and architects. Axiseng doesn’t have a dedicated marketing team or budget. We believe our director-led approach, building relationships with our clients and our continued service excellence are what win us repeat business.”
Over the years, Axiseng has increased its female workforce to 35% with the implementation of its EDI policies. This is significant in a sector that continues to be male-dominated.
“We’ve had a female presence at management level for many years. We trust this encourages future female engineers to become industry leaders,” Gillian Corrigan proudly states.
“It has been recognised positively and will hopefully inspire and attract more females to the industry. There is a greater gender balance coming through from third level which can only be a good thing.”
Operational excellence, an unwavering commitment to Health & Safety, a structured approach to improving processes and a willingness to embrace new technology have been central to the practice’s growth and success. Managing several challenges in recent years has brought material improvements to day-to-day operations affecting Axiseng’s people, processes and technology.
These include new communication methods that still ensure collaborative environment with leadership and mentoring; the implementation of a hybrid blending working policy to harness the power of offering flexibility to employees; holiday exchange policy; a comprehensive review process to ensure employees are supported and feel encouraged to develop their skill set and career; a menopause in the workplace awareness programme and free menstrual products offered to all employees; and certified cycling-friendly employer which is currently in the process of becoming a certified CPD accredited employer.
Examples of Axiseng’s outstanding work can be found all over Dublin and beyond. It is currently providing the M&E design services for Project Connect at 118 St Stephen’s Green, which represents the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland’s aim to provide vital infrastructure for pioneering health sciences research and innovation as well as creating a space of local community engagement.
Axiseng is also currently providing M&E design services to the Irish Glass Bottle site for Ronan Group Real Estate. The site is the largest mixed-use development in Dublin City, equivalent in size to the entire South Dockland. Previous high-profile projects Axiseng was involved with include Capital Dock and Salesforce Tower.
The Irish Construction Industry (ICI) Awards recognise, encourage and celebrate original and innovative contractors, businesses, teams, consultants and projects that demonstrate excellence in the built environment. Despite winning coveted awards on a regular basis, every nomination and accolade is cherished and greatly appreciated by the Axiseng team.
“It’s always an honour to be recognised alongside the very best in the industry,” Cian says of their awards success.
“Recognition for our engineers is huge. They take immense pride in their work, are diligent and conscientious. We’re looking forward to a great night and the prospect of bringing home another award.”
Here’s to the next 20 years of the mechanical and electrical engineering experts!
