Coming up on 20 years in business, Neville Civil Works in Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare is a leading utilities and civil engineering contractor covering the Mid-West region.
From humble beginnings in 2004 when it was set up as a small operation by John and Susan Neville, the family-run business has grown to employ 35 people and many more on a subcontract basis. John is joined by his sons Dónal and Sean, and their wives Gillian and Emma. Another son, Gearoid, will also be coming on board soon after spending the last two years working as a civil engineer in London.
Neville Civil Works has built a highly experienced team and a modern fleet of plant and vehicles to cater for major communications providers, local authorities and management companies. Its main client is the TLI Group which is a utility infrastructure consultancy and construction company operating extensively within the utilities sector in Ireland and the UK. Other clients on its books are Circet, Actavo, Limerick City and County Council, Clare County Council and Tipperary County Council.
The Co. Clare company is collaborating with TLI, Circet and Actavo in rolling out the National Broadband Plan across rural Ireland. It is one of the largest fibre projects in the history of the State which will offer high-speed broadband to every citizen and business in Ireland.
“Broadband build is our bread and butter,” Dónal Neville explains.
“We have five / six crews dedicated to broadband work all of the time. When the build is finished, the focus will be on drops or connections, so we anticipate a few busy years ahead.”
Neville Civil Works are experts in utilities, roadworks and groundworks. The utilities services provided are broadband and telecommunications infrastructure, water mains and electrical works. Road construction, tarmacadam, street lighting, cycle lanes, footpaths and pedestrian crossings come under its roadworks remit. For groundworks, the company specialises in site prep and clearance along with site services, including water, storm and foul.
The family business is on both the Limerick City & County Council and Tipperary County Council Active Travel framework. With funding from the National Transport Authority, Limerick City & County Council is transforming Limerick’s cycling and walking network. This partnership will deliver a high-quality, accessible and connected network of cycleways and pedestrian routes, and aims to tackle transport problems caused by solo car use in urban areas.
“We’ve done long stretches of footpaths and street lighting as part of the Limerick Active Travel scheme,” Dónal says.
“We’re currently resurfacing a carpark in Kilrush for Clare County Council and will soon be starting a €500,000 project in Clonlara for Clare County Council also under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme. The scheme will consist of new footpaths, street lighting, raised tables and four speed ramps. It will lead to the creation of a plaza area at the village crossroads along with the development of a multi-purpose space at Kiltenanlea Church.
“Another upcoming project will see us carry out resurfacing works to the two main roads into UL (University of Limerick).”
Neville Civil Works’ success has been built on forging close and lasting relationships with clients as well as various consulting engineers and quantity surveyors. The company boasts a wealth of experience in the civils sector combined with a dedicated workforce of highly-skilled operatives who are supported by the same tried and tested subcontractors, including Johnny Carey Groundworks, Michael McMahon Electrical, Cummins Tarmac Ltd and Evan Marrinan Groundworks.
It has earned an enviable reputation for top-quality work delivered on time and within budget through its highly-quality management, technical and administrative teams, who work closely with each individual client to ensure delivery of projects.
The contractor is fully committed to maintaining a safe working environment, with its Health & Safety policy being fully implemented and updated on a regular basis. It is ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and Safe T Cert accredited. The Nevilles’ main suppliers include Roadstone, Breedon, Clare Hire, Chadwicks, Loughrea Plant Hire, Whelan Plant Sales and TBF Thompson.
Neville Civil Works has an array of plant and equipment to cater for any civil groundworks, including excavators, dump trucks, lorries, low loaders, rollers, pavers, compressors and compaction equipment. The company recently took delivery of a stunning new Volvo FMX 13 540 8×4 rigid truck from McCarthy Commercials. The truck is finished off with a Fitzgerald’s tipper body, Palfinger crane, Volvo roof accessory bar, beacons, air horns and grille strobes.
“We’re currently running a fleet of 30 trucks and vans. The trucks are a mix of Renault, Volvo and DAF, and the vans are Renault. We have our own workshop and mechanics for fleet maintenance and repairs,” the affable company director continues.
“We pride ourselves on our hassle-free service. We go about our business in a professional and efficient manner, and that is why the same clients have stuck with us through thick and thin. That and the fact that we have good equipment and good men who employ proper traffic management. That is one of the things our customers like to see.”
As Neville Civil Works continues to go from strength to strength, the family business would like to take this opportunity to thank its clients and suppliers for their support as well as its staff and subcontractors for their hard work, dedication and expertise.
Here’s to the next 20 years!
