Headquartered just outside of Thurles, Co Tipperary, leading construction firm Clancy have a reputation for delivering excellent projects all throughout the country. Building Ireland learned more from Project Manager, Cliff Murphy about the company which will mark 73 years in business in 2020.
First set-up by Mr John Clancy in 1947, Clancy is an indigenous Irish company that enjoys three generations of continual development.
With its head office in Drangan, Thurles, Co Tipperary, the company has strategically opened offices in Dublin, Limerick and Cork and has developed into a strong and innovative organisation, with vast experience in all sectors of the construction industry throughout Ireland.
2013 saw Clancy appoint four members of its senior management team to the board of directors which has since brought added energy and expertise to the board.
They continue to invest in new technology, ensuring that clients benefit from the efficiencies gained and that they have access to important innovations such as Building Information Modelling.
Project Manager Cliff Murphy, who has been on board with Clancy since 2007, took the time to fill Building Ireland in on this thriving business recently.
“The company is 72 years established with its head office based just outside of Thurles in Drangan,” said Cliff.
“I’m here since ‘07 and at the moment business is very good. It’s nearly too busy but that’s the way we like to have it here.”
Clancy are currently immersed in projects at Marymount Care Centre in Westmanstown, Lucan, Co Dublin, New Renal Diaylsis Unit at Tallaght Hospital along with a new housing development at Boherboy Road five kilometres outside of Cork city centre.
The latter project saw Clancy and Lyonshall Ltd partner with Cork City Council and Rebuilding Ireland to deliver affordable homes at a new housing development at Boherboy Road.
In November, the housing development was launched by An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Tánaiste Simon Coveney and Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy.
This new housing development will include a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments and two, three and four bed houses.
Clancy’s work in 2019 also saw the firm shortlisted for the Fit Out Project of the Year in the Healthcare category at the prestigious Fit Out Awards in the Clayton Hotel, Dublin on November 27th, losing out to Caulfield Wright Architects on the night.
Fit-out projects have become something of a speciality for Clancy and recent years the level of craftsmanship and project management required for commercial projects has increased massively.
Clancy recognised this and made sure that its staff had the requisite skills to deliver these projects to the highest possible level. The company’s ability to meet the budget requirements and high expectations of clients has resulted in a growth in the number of commercial projects it has completed.
For Clancy, its 72-year history has brought about a huge deal of experience and they use these years of experience to deliver a service that truly reflects the client’s particular needs.
Listening is a key part of the company’s strategy to ensure that they fully understand the objectives of the project and concerns around particular aspects of it.
Once they fully grasp the project, they resource it with the most experienced Project Manager and team to ensure that it is executed with the minimum of fuss and in accordance with agreed timelines and budget.
Clancy are flexible which means that they have extensive experience in commercial, public sector and residential developments. They exist to take projects all the way through from inception to build and beyond with their wholly owned Facility Management Company.
Clancy’s continual investment in technology ensures that the client benefits from the efficiencies gained by the business and that they have access to important innovations such as Building Information Modelling.
Above all, safety is Clancy’s number one priority. Through their safety department they carry out both in house training and external training to ensure all their direct staff has the required training in keeping with their statutory obligations under health and safety legislation and indeed their own training needs to ensure they develop the skills sets of all staff both professional, trades people and general operatives.
They are fully aware that Safety is paramount to all work they engage in and are proud to be SafeT Certified. It gives the client comfort to know that they operate a Grade A safety management system that only a few companies in Ireland comply with.
The Clancy safety record speaks for itself. They are SafeT certified with a Grade A for the seventh consecutive year which only 10% of contractors in Ireland have obtained.
“Safety has always been paramount at Clancy,” said Cliff.
“It’s a high standard that we work to here and all of our projects are built to a high standard, which has been a huge part of the company’s success.”
Rewind back a decade or so and the success story wasn’t just as clear as it is today.
During the years 2007-2012, Clancy turnover dropped from almost €70m in 2006 to €15m in 2010.
However, they managed to get through that very difficult period by retrenchment and restructuring, carrying out SWOT analyses.
At the same time, Clancy managed to maintain their position within the industry by retaining core staff and their core competencies.
Due to strategic planning and retaining core staff and competencies Clancy have increased turnover year on year since 2011.
Clancy decided in March of 2013 to set an ambitious target of €40m sales per annum within four years, however, Clancy are fully aware that’s its profit is what remains the key.
With business currently booming, it’s safe to say that 2020 looks like another blossoming year for the company as it edges closer towards 75 years in business.
