Busy times at Mike Maloney Carpentry & Construction

1 Jul , 2022

Based in Ballymore, Co Westmeath, Mike Maloney Carpentry & Construction Ltd offers services in property maintenance, first and second fixing, wood flooring, extensions and renovation. Building Ireland caught up with the man himself to find all about the ins and outs of the company – from its origins to the current state of business.

2022 sees Mike Maloney Carpentry & Construction Ltd mark seven years in business and the Co Westmeath native has seldom been busier.

Employing four full-time staff, the company offers a wide range of services to its customers and, at the moment, bathroom renovations would be up there with its most popular on offer.

Mike Maloney and his wife Sarah are directors of the business operating out of Ballymore, Co Westmeath and oversee the day-to-day running of the company.

Building Ireland touched base with Mike to learn more about what is a thriving business in the country’s Midlands and also heard about its most recent projects.

“At the moment, we’re working in new builds but we also do a wide range of work here,” Mike outlined.

“There’s a lot of bathroom renovations and general home renovations,” says Mike.

It’s that wide range of services which has saw the company enjoy growth and earn a solid reputation amongst its customers since its inception in 2015.

Its origins date back to a time when Mike served as apprentice carpenter before becoming qualified and eventually taking the decision to go out in his own.

It was a move that was more than a decade in the making but, once it did happen, he never looked back and today Mike and his wife Sarah run a successful carpentry and construction venture together.

“I was a carpenter and did my apprenticeship before going on to work for one lad for 13 years,” said Mike.

“I eventually decided to go out on my own and it took a lot of hard work, working nights and late hours to get this business off the ground.

“We eventually did and, thankfully, we’re still here today and going strong at the moment.”

Going strong might be somewhat of an understatement. Mike Maloney Carpentry & Construction Ltd has hardly ever been busier and the past 12 months marked the company’s best year to date.

The plan now is to keep going in the same vein and continue delivering projects in an excellent and timely manner for customers all throughout the Midlands.

Come summer, Mike and the team in Ballymore plan to take a very much well-earned break as he explained.

“It’s very busy at the moment,” he said. “This seems to be the busiest we’ve been this time of year and 2021 itself was our busiest year I’d say.”

For now, though, the work continues to come thick and fast for Mike Maloney Carpentry & Construction Ltd.

Most of the company’s current projects are within relatively close proximity to Ballymore, which is situated along the R390 road between Athlone and Mullingar, with one on-going in the village itself.

“We’ve a job in Tyrrellspass which is a new build that is more or less completed at this stage,” Mike outlined.

“We’ve another house started in the village of Ballymore and one currently ongoing in The Downs in Mullingar.

“There’s a couple of bathroom renovations going on and we’ve couple more down the line, so we’re kept busy between all of them.”

So, all of that considered, what has been the secret to Mike Maloney Carpentry & Construction Ltd’s success over the past seven years?

How has small company start-up grown into a thriving venture which only seemed to get busier during the Covid-19 pandemic and today holds a glowing reputation amongst its clients?

For Mike, a lot of it is down to personal touch with clients and, of course, the excellent service the company carries out time and time again.

“I would be getting the phone calls from clients and I’d be keen to meet them face to face straight away to discuss their project,” he said.

“I’d go with them whether it was for picking tiles or picking timber and always try and offer them my best advice.

“I think that’s something that they appreciate and it shows from the rate of work we’re doing at the moment.”

“The lads that work with me daily have the same dedication to each job as I do, they have a high standard of work and we love to see the finished result in each job we complete.”

It should be noted too that the company doesn’t tend to advertise either, letting its own work do the talking as pictures of the projects are posted on to its popular Facebook page.

“Word of mouth and our Facebook page would be the biggest advertisements for us,” said Mike.

“We get loads of calls through our Facebook page and, to be honest, I don’t really advertise because we’ve been getting enough work through it for years now.”

You can’t argue with the results.
