Experience is a key commodity for any successful business to have as it not only allows companies to expertly deal with any situation that might befall them, but it also gives the client the peace of mind in knowing that the work will be carried out to the highest standard possible.
The construction industry has emerged from a difficult time and is now finding its feet again in Ireland, but for some Irish companies this is only a small part of the market that they work in.
One such company is Dublin headquartered ByrneLooby which is an award winning civil and structural consultancy employing 150 people with operations in the UK, Ireland and the Middle East.
And for this month’s edition of Building Ireland, we profile this successful business with offices throughout the isle of Ireland (Dublin, Cork, Galway and Belfast) as well as in Bahrain, Dubai, Doha, Guildford, London and Manchester.
Group Marketing & PR Manager Eva O’Toole spoke to us and gave her insight into this ever-growing business.
First we took a look at the history of this multi-national firm.
“ByrneLooby is a leading international consulting engineering practice. Set up in 1998, by business partners John Byrne and Michael Looby, the company provides complex engineering solutions to geotechnical, water, infrastructure, marine, building and energy projects across Ireland, Europe, North Africa and the Middle East”.
“The company has seen great change and faced many challenges over the past 18 years. Now stronger than ever with a workforce of over 150 in 10 different office locations 60pc of the company’s work is international. This work includes large-scale projects such as the Terminal 2 buildings in London’s Heathrow Airport, the London Crossrail project, one of Europe’s largest railway and infrastructure projects, with a new 40km rail tunnel that runs underground from east to west across Greater London and the impressive Lusail expressway in Doha, a $960m roadway that consists of a series of complex underpasses, flyovers and multi-level interchanges.”
“Our Irish clients span both the public and private sectors, with developers and contractors such as SISK, BAM, PJ Hegarty, Murphy International, Veolia, EPS and PJ Edwards, while on the public side we work with agencies such as the Office of Public Works and Irish Water. Some of the best-known Irish projects we have worked on include the M50, Aviva Stadium, Swords Wastewater Treatment Plant and Canada House.”
ByrneLooby is a specialist engineering consultancy with particular expertise in geotechnical, civil, structural and water engineering services. They are engineering designers for both permanent and temporary works and project management consultants.
Having 18 years’ experience in the industry has helped the company gain many projects and O’Toole revealed that they take great pride in their work.

Certifications that the company hold include RISQS Accreditation, ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System, ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System, and OHSAS 18001:2007 Occupational, and Health and Safety Assessment Series.
The success of the company has been recognised by the amount of awards that they have been presented with over the years and this year alone, they have received the honour of being Irish National Champions in the European Business Awards, awarded the Deloitte Best Managed Company accolade for the third year in a row and impressively three awards from the Irish Construction Industry including Engineering Firm of the Year for the second year in a row. Across the water ByrneLooby has been named finalist in the British Construction Industry Awards, a NCE Top 100 Company and UK Consultancy of the Year Finalist in the Ground Engineering Awards for the third year in a row.
So what does the future hold for the company?
“We definitely see Ireland as an exciting place to do business and are hugely optimistic for Ireland’s future. We remain focused on continuing to grow and expand ByrneLooby, which will lead to an increase in our talented workforce to 250 by 2020. This will see an additional 100 people join the group over this period with new job creation coming from both business support and engineering disciplines,” explains O’Toole.
“We are always looking for opportunities within the market, for example, earlier this month ByrneLooby acquired Cronin Millar, a company that specialises in the planning and design of ports and harbours. This acquisition strengthens our marine capability to service the growing Irish and international markets in marine developments.” O’Toole concluded.
