Based in Rathnew, Co Wicklow, CARLIN is a Chartered Quantity Surveying Practice which handles a wide and varied portfolio of work for its clients across Ireland and the UK. Building Ireland touched base with Managing Director, Andrew Carlin to find out more about the ins and outs of what is a young and thriving business with bases on both sides of the border.
Business is good these days at CARLIN and the plan for company Director Andrew Carlin is to try and keep things that way right through to 2022.
Established in August 2015, the company has enjoyed steady growth, priding itself on repeat clients due to the quality service and value for money.
It had been the vision for Andrew Carlin when he first set-up his venture nearly half a dozen years back and it now operates from two bases – one in Rathnew, Co Wicklow and the other in Newry, Co Down.
Building Ireland spoke with Andrew recently to learn all about the company – from its origins to the state of business at the moment.
“We are a Chartered Quantity Surveying practice that also offers project management in both public and private works,” the Managing Director outlined.
“We have a strong history of working on high-end residential projects including 9 Millbank in Westminster, London and the Cliff Beach House in Ardmore, Waterford. We are also currently involved in public sector works in Ireland with Cluid Housing and with the Department of Education”
“We provide full services both pre and post contract; from concept design until completion and handover.
“We are passionate about sustainable construction. We set ourselves apart with our unrivalled knowledge in bespoke homes and high-end residential developments. We understand these markets and confidentiality is an important part of working with our team.”
CARLIN has already developed a proven track record when it comes to delivering successful projects for its clients which are built around the company’s commitment and expertise, coupled with its ability to develop strong working relationships with clients, designers and contractors.
Having previously worked with Berkeley Group Holdings and Mivan, Andrew himself gained experience on some of the most prominent projects in London at a Senior level and it helped him take the decision to set-up his own business in the summer of 2015.
“My own background is as a Quantity Surveyor and I’ve previously worked in both Ireland and London,” he said.
“I always had the desire to set up a practice and the transition came when I left London in 2015.
“After that, a couple of clients said to me ‘if you go out on your own, we’ll go with you’, so that’s exactly what I did.
“I set-up in Newry and later moved down to Wicklow with my family to be closer to Dublin and the sea.”
Broomhall Business Park, Rathnew, Co Wicklowhas been the company’s headquarters since 2018, with the original office at Canal Quay, Newry, Co Down still active.
Andrew himself is a native of Newry and always takes a hands-on approach when it comes to his company’s projects. He believes in taking a focused involvement at key stages supported by an experienced team that can bring real value to a project.
From the beginning of a project to completion, contact with the client is closely maintained with Andrew.
The man himself described business at the moment at CARLIN as “Uniquely challenging and busy” in these unprecedented times brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.
So, the burning question is what has been the secret to the company’s success thus far?
Asked why CARLIN’s clients choose them first ahead of other competitors out there, Andrew pointed out that attention to detail goes a long way in this line of work.
“Since Day One, attention to detail has been what we’re all about and what we are known for.”
Looking after their clients’ vision, investment and carbon footprint, CARLIN looks to have a bright future ahead with its big-name clients in both Ireland and the UK.
Looking towards the months ahead and into 2022, the company’s owner and founder is targeting further growth as government restrictions continue to ease and a return to normality gets closer.
“Our hopes are to expand and have more senior level surveyors and project managers join our team.
“We want to grow the company again next year and expand more into the Dublin market,” Andrew concluded.
