For more than a decade, Carlow Electrical Services has quietly built a reputation as one of the South East’s most trusted electrical contracting companies. From domestic rewiring jobs to large commercial maintenance contracts, the business has grown steadily, earning loyal clients through reliability, consistency and a strong personal approach to customer service.
Today, the company employs 14 staff members and operates a growing fleet across the South East, servicing projects in the commercial, industrial and domestic sectors.
Under the leadership of Managing Director Cathal Lawlor, the business has expanded from a one-man operation into a respected regional contractor known for quality workmanship and dependable maintenance support.
Building Ireland caught up with Cathal recently to discuss the ins and outs of the business and his ambition for it to grow further.
“We’re doing commercial, industrial and domestic projects and maintenance work as well,” he explained. “We do maintenance across nursing homes and schools. We also do one-off homes and have long-term contracts on residential developments across the South East.
“We’re registered with Safe Electric and the PSA for security systems. We do CCTV, intruder alarms, access control and automatic gates as well.”
That wide-ranging capability has become one of the company’s defining strengths. While some electrical contractors focus exclusively on either domestic or industrial work, Carlow Electrical Services has built its success by remaining flexible and responsive across multiple sectors.
Whether it is a new-build housing development, emergency maintenance call-out or a security installation for a commercial premises, the company has positioned itself as a dependable all-round service provider.
Cathal’s route into business ownership began long before Carlow Electrical Services officially opened its doors. Having worked in electrical and maintenance roles both in Ireland and abroad, he gained valuable hands-on experience that would later shape the company’s practical, customer-focused ethos.
“My background was working in electrical and maintenance,” he said. “I started this company two years after coming back from Australia. I got the experience over there and in other places as well and just started this up then in 2015.”
Like many Irish tradespeople of his generation, Cathal spent time overseas during the recession years, developing skills and gaining exposure to larger-scale operations before returning home to establish his own company.
What began as a small local venture quickly gathered momentum as demand for reliable electrical services increased throughout the region.
From the outset, the company concentrated not just on installations, but also on maintenance — an area that has since become a major part of the business. Maintaining long-term relationships with clients has provided stability and consistent growth over the past eleven years.
That growth is visible not only in staffing numbers, but also in the scale and diversity of projects now undertaken by the company.
Carlow Electrical Services now works across a broad range of sectors, carrying out projects for contractors, hotels, nursing homes, schools and homeowners throughout the South East.
“It’s very busy at the minute,” Cathal said.
“We do a lot of maintenance across hotels as well, and with the nursing homes we do maintenance across seven or eight of those for the one client.”
The importance of maintenance work cannot be overstated in today’s fast-paced commercial environment. Hotels, healthcare facilities and schools rely heavily on electrical systems operating efficiently and safely around the clock.
Carlow Electrical Services has built trust by offering continuity, quick response times and technicians who understand the individual needs of each site.
That familiarity and consistency is something Cathal believes gives the company a significant advantage.
“I think it’s down to the personal touch and the ease of getting in contact with us,” he explained.
“With the ongoing maintenance then, we’d have the same guys going to the same places all the time so they’d know exactly what’s going on there.”
In an industry where large national operators can sometimes struggle to provide continuity, the company’s local approach has proven highly effective. Clients know the electricians arriving on-site, and staff become familiar with each premises and its systems over time. That relationship-based model has helped Carlow Electrical Services develop long-standing partnerships with businesses and organisations throughout the region.
Although electrical installations remain at the core of the business, the company has also expanded into CCTV and security systems, offering clients a broader range of services under one roof.
Its registration with both Safe Electric and the Private Security Authority (PSA) allows the company to undertake certified electrical and security-related work, including camera systems, CCTV installations and other integrated security solutions.
This diversification reflects the changing needs of customers, particularly commercial and institutional clients seeking integrated maintenance and security solutions from trusted contractors.
As technology continues to evolve, electrical contractors are increasingly required to combine traditional electrical expertise with smart systems, energy management and security technologies. Carlow Electrical Services has adapted to those demands while maintaining its emphasis on dependable service and practical solutions.
Despite its growth, the company remains firmly rooted in the local community. Cathal’s ambition has never been about rapid expansion for its own sake, but rather sustainable growth built on reputation and quality service.
“The aim is to continue growing,” he said.
“We’re expanding all the time to meet our customers’ needs. The industry is constantly changing, and we’re always adapting our services to keep up with that. We’re involved in renewable energy projects as well, and we’ll continue to develop the business in line with what our customers are looking for.”
That measured approach reflects a business that understands its strengths. Rather than chasing every emerging trend, Carlow Electrical Services has focused on maintaining high standards across the services it already provides.
In an increasingly competitive market, that consistency has become one of the company’s greatest assets.
Eleven years after its establishment, Carlow Electrical Services stands as an example of how local expertise, hard work and strong client relationships can build a thriving regional business.
From nursing homes and hotels to residential developments and schools, the company continues to play an important role in keeping homes, businesses and public facilities powered safely and efficiently across the South East.
And with a growing team, a busy schedule and a reputation built on trust, the future looks bright for the firm as it enters its second decade in business.
