Clancy Construction’s unwavering commitment to Health & Safety was recognised yet again at the 2024 National Irish Safety Organisation / Northern Ireland Safety Group (NISO / NISG) Safety Awards which took place in the Great Southern Hotel, Killarney on October 11 last.
One of Ireland’s leading building companies, Clancy Construction was delighted to receive a ‘Distinction’ Award for the third year running. The accolades reflect the high standards of Health & Safety at the Co. Tipperary-headquartered company which operates a culture of “doing the right thing even when no-one is looking” when it comes to safety.
The NISO / NISG Awards were established in 1992 with just 20 entries and have grown to become Ireland’s premier safety awards. The Awards scheme recognises achievement in Health & Safety Management Systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement. The Awards are also a way of auditing company’s Health & Safety Management Systems and finding out how well they’re performing against other companies within the construction sector.
To achieve a NISO Health & Safety Award, companies have to submit information and examples of how Health & Safety is managed on a day-to-day basis in the following areas: Health & Safety Management, Hazard Identification & Risk Management, Implementation and Operation of Health & Safety Policies and Procedures, Health & Safety Communication and Consultation, Proactive Health & Safety Management, Occupational Health & Hygiene, Workplace Health & Wellbeing, Health & Safety Training, Reactive Health & Safety Management, Emergency Preparedness and Response, and Work-Related Vehicle Safety, including Driving for Work.
“We’re thrilled to win another NISO Award. It’s fantastic for the company and reflects well on everyone,” Clancy EHS Manager Barry Walsh enthuses.
“This award is testament to the continuous promotion of EHS across all the sites on a daily basis by our entire Safety team. It recognises all the hard work being done and the efforts of each site management team. The awards submission took a lot of time and effort to put together, but it’s well worth it as it essentially doubles up as a self-audit of our systems.
“These awards, coupled with our ISO 45001 and Safe-T-Cert ‘Grade A’ accreditation, are crucial to securing public sector, healthcare and commercial works. They give added confidence and peace of mind to our clients.
“Great credit is due to our two regional EHS Managers Tom Regan (Munster) and Jason Rao (Dublin), EHS Advisors Fergal Keogh and Dean Costello (both Dublin), Pat Carroll (Wexford / Kilkenny), Denis Shanahan (Abbeyleix) and Keith Walsh (Midlands) as well as our Safety / Construction Director Declan Fitzpatrick who ensure that the highest Health & Safety standards are practiced and adhered to.”
Barry adds: “The six core values of Clancy are Sustainability, Professionalism, Quality, Teamwork / Collaboration, Commitment / Loyalty and Safety, with Safety being the No. 1 core value.”
Clancy Construction runs a number of campaigns and initiatives throughout the year which enable it to achieve continuous improvement of its Health & Safety system. These include Safety Forums, Safety Core Value Champion and Contractors of the Month.
At the last of its three Safety Forums held in 2024, Construction Director Declan Fitzpatrick, Managing Director John O’Shaughnessy, EHS Manager Barry Walsh and EHS Regional Manager Tom Regan made a series of presentations to team members and various subcontractors from Clancy sites dotted around the country.
Maria Ryan of Crystal Lean Solutions coordinated excellent collaborative workshops before Marian Deasy concluded the day with a moving talk at a packed Midlands Park Hotel Conference Room in Portlaoise. Marian’s son Lorcan died following a workplace accident in 2018 and her powerful message was heard by over 200 attendees across the three workshops. Marian was thanked for speaking so bravely and reminding everyone about the importance of Health & Safety while working onsite.
The Clancy Contractors of the Month initiative rewards subcontractors for demonstrating good EHS standards onsite, good PPE compliance and a positive attitude to Health & Safety. The contractors selected continue to abide by the Clancy core values which are integral to the company’s ways of working.
For example, the June 2024 winners and the sites they were working on were as follows: Trevor Hill Plumbing – Boherboy Road and Camoge Park, Croom; Arlington Scaffold Services – CUH, Cork; Crutt Joinery – Abbeyleix House; MnR Scaffolding – Deerpark, Gorey; Jones Engineering – Mater Private Hospital; Ivan Neale Ltd – Mount Carmel Community Hospital; Castle Group – Donnybrook Apartments; ONCCE – St Laurence Park; M&N Groundworks – St Vincent’s University Hospital; Collcon Groundworks – Ronald McDonald House; Butler Scaffolding – Fox Meadow, Kilkenny; and Dominic O’Connor Ltd – University Hospital Limerick.
Clancy’s motto is ‘Built on Partnership’. This partnership approach reinforces collaboration and teamwork, and lends itself to an air of inclusivity between all parties involved in the project.
The long-established main contractor has raised its profile within the industry to compete at the highest level. This has resulted in increases in turnover which the company expects will continue in the years ahead. Clancy’s continual investment in technology ensures that the client benefits from the efficiencies gained by it, and that they have access to important innovations such as BIM and Offsite Construction.
Clancy’s excellent safety standards give clients the peace of mind that Clancy operates its safety management system to one of the highest standards that can be achieved in the industry.
