McKelan Construction had its origin in Wexford in 2003. It was founded jointly by Sean McKelvie and John Whelan having previously worked alongside each other in the industry for almost 20 years.

Sadly, John Whelan’s successful journey with the company was short lived when he passed away in January 2017 after a short illness. John is greatly missed by his family, his work colleagues and by many of McKelan’s long-standing clients.

In his honour, McKelan Constructon is committed to continuing his professional work ethic into the future as it continues to service the private and public construction sector.

McKelan Construction is a young vibrant business with an energetic workforce of 20 full-time staff which is committed to helping the company’s clients achieve competitive advantage through a flexible and innovative approach to design, construct and fit out.

Sean has been immersed in the construction industry his entire working life and was good enough to take time out of his busy schedule to tell us about the company he co-founded.

“We’re based in Macmine in Bree, Co Wexford and as well as having 20 full-time staff we also employ somewhere around 150 indirectly,” Sean stated.

Today McKelan Construction Ltd offers its clients a diverse portfolio of construction and building work comprising of industrial, commercial and leisure to housing and private development.

Past projects have seen the company working all throughout Dublin but they’re not only tied to the capital. McKelan Construction Ltd “go where the work is”, according to Sean, with past commercial projects having them stationed in Ballybrittas, Co Laois for Skoda and Pat Keogh Car Sales.

Other commercial projects recent completed include Skoda’s first new showroom and service centre from a green field site in Ballymount, Co Dublin and Maha Ireland’s new commercial and office building in Rathcoole, Co Dublin.

On the leisure side, McKelan Construction have a CV with the likes of the Brooke Lodge Hotel and Leisure and Conference Centre Macreddin Village, Aughrim, Co Wicklow, as well as Kingswood Hotel and Restaurant on the old Naas Road, Kingswood, Co Dublin.

“On the domestic work, we have worked throughout the entire Leinster region construction houses and apartments for clients,” said Sean.

“McKelan Construction are currently mixing domestic work, commercial and recently a national school in Arklow, Co Wicklow, so we are kept very business.”

Work in the educational sector has been a common theme for construction companies throughout the country since the downturn hit and McKelan Construction have made sure to follow suit.

Sean also added that McKelan has built a strong relationship with many architect offices over the years which was a great help during the downturn which brought the construction industry to its knees.

Looking ahead to the coming months and the rest of 2017, Sean outlined that the company’s goals for the year was to make sure it was a successful one and to expand the company’s turnover.

“That would be the main hope for the year,” he concluded.
