7 Sep , 2022

Next year Cumnor Construction Ltd is marking its 40th anniversary and, right now, business is thriving. General contracting is the core activity of the Company.

Over the past four decades, Cumnor Construction Ltd has built its reputation on quality, on personal service and on attention to detail. Now operating with 105 staff based in Cork and Dublin, the Company has enjoyed consistent growth and success across the Commercial, Industrial, Educational, Healthcare and General Building sectors.

Building Ireland touched base with Contracts Director Cian O’Mahony to learn more about the Company.

“The industry is extremely busy at the moment, but trading conditions are very difficult and volatile with uncontrolled price inflation on many products,” explained Cian.

“However, we have a diversified turnover profile, typically 60% Building Contracts, 30% Civil Engineering Contracts and 10% self-generated Private Developments, which enables us to mitigate costs and to navigate the Company through these uncertain times.”

The Company’s Civil Engineering Division provides a wide range of specialist services to both the construction industry and private clients: Slope Stabilisation, Rock Anchoring, Soil Nailing, Piling, Shotcreteing, Guniting, Reinforced Earth Structures, House Stabilisation, Masonary Arch Bridge Rehabilitation.

ISO 9001 certified since 2009, Cumnor Construction Ltd is committed to continual improvement through the operation of an integrated Quality and Safety Management accredited system and are currently in the process of getting certified to ISO14001.

Cumnor Construction Ltd remains committed to its on-going training policy to ensure that all personnel have the necessary training to perform their duties.

“The provision of a reliable quality service to our clients, down through the years, has ensured that Cumnor Construction have secured repeat business time after time.”

In February, Cumnor Construction Ltd was announced as a finalist at the 2022 Irish Construction Excellence Awards in the Residential – Social & Affordable Under €3m category for its work in Structural Conservation and Restoration works to a building at Shandon Street, Cork City.

The project for Cork City Council saw two historic architectural buildings, which had fallen into dereliction, being converted into nine apartment units.

Work on the project included construction, structural consolidation and conservation; The contract value came in at just under €3m.

“It was a great project to be a part of as it is part of the regeneration of a very historic part of Cork City,” said Cian. “There were a lot of restrictions brought in mid construction because of the Coronavirus pandemic. We had to change our methods of work because of this and that was challenging but we adapted and adjusted so that the contract could keep going.  All in all, though, it was a great project to be involved in and one that we’re immensely proud of at Cumnor.”

Looking towards the coming months for the business, Cian says Cumnor Construction will be targeting more growth while also looking to ensure the demand of clientele is continuously met week in, week out.

“Going into the future, we want to really keep growing at a solid pace and just continue to offer our clients a quality product going forward,” he concluded.
