Delivering sustainable products at sustainable prices

7 Dec , 2017

CubicM3 has been leading the way in sustainable engineering solutions since its inception, with the company operating in Dublin from 2003. Microstrain Ltd who in April 2017, re-branded, changing its trading name to CubicM3 has its Irish base in Swords for the past six years and it is headed up Director Stephen Neill.

Stephen told Building Ireland all about what the company have to offer and why he feels CubicM3 and its product uptake have seen such substantial growth in recent years.

“Basically, what we do is offer innovative and advanced stormwater solutions that comply with International standards. CubicM3 specialise in stormwater attenuation, rainwater harvesting and we have a mechanical division and an electrical division as well. We also do Solar PV work here and so can offer a sustainable envirotech package.” Stephen outlined.

CubicM3 is the trading name of Microstrain Ltd, is a member of the Cubic Solutions Group of companies which has offices in Australia, Europe and the Middle East. Backed by state-of-the-art research and technical support, the group  offer innovative and advanced stormwater solutions that comply with International standards, and achieve the required factors of safety.

The company’s staff has the expertise, qualifications and experience to provide engineering advice on pipeline design, product selection, installation and cost-benefit analysis and they identify the most efficient way to meet their customers’ needs.

Having installed StormTech® attenuation  systems internationally for two decades, CubicM3’s highly qualified engineers have an unrivalled depth of knowledge.

In Ireland we have a lot of water, but we only realise the value of water when it becomes scarce. CubicM3 provides rain water harvesting solutions to provide a building with an independent supply of water for flushing toilets, laundry and Irrigation.

However, the first and core product in the CubicM3 range is the StormTech® chamber attenuation systems. It was the chambers and ADS pipes that broke Microstrain Ltd, now CUBICM³, into the Civil Engineering market in Ireland.

“I was originally in the civil engineering trade in New Zealand and moved to London before moving to Dublin in 2001,” Stephen stated.

“In 2003, Australian, Trevor Loffel decided to set up the business in Dublin and Trevor eventually moved back to Australia to expand the business internationally. In order to align the companies and strengthen our brand we now all trade under the CubicM3 name.”

With Ireland being a country with heavy rainfall and all the associated problems stemming from the resulting runoff, stormwater management has become a priority for Councils and developers alike.

“The StormTech® range of stormwater attenuation chambers have solved many of the engineering challenges associated with mitigating for storm events.” explained Stephen.

He continues: “One of the bigger projects we’re currently working on would be Pairc Ui Chaoimh in Co Cork. That project started for us on February 1st and we just completed in May. The 4G training pitch on the perimeter of the stadium was required to be built on the floodplain of the River Lee.  In order to reclaim the floodplain, the StormTech SC310 chamber was positioned under the pitch to ensure sufficient storage was available to hold the flood waters until such time as the water levels in the river abated.”

The Regeneration of Pairc Ui Chaoimh was a massive undertaking and timing was essential. It needed to be ready for use by the handover date in June.

Stephen stated: “The advantage of The StormTech® chambers is that they are extremely quick to install and as CubicM3 can offer in house design, unforeseen changes to plan layouts can be made and effected without much of a delay.”

In terms of what makes StormTech® stand out from other systems on the market, the chambers have a large capacity for storing stormwater and a unrivalled structural strength due to the arch design of the chambers. They have been tested and approved to European standards.

While utilised under car parks, roads and more recently along airport runways, the developer after consultation with CubicM3, took an innovative approach to keep the training pitch flood free and playable. With the stadium on a list of potential venues as part of Ireland’s 2023 Rugby World Cup bid, having the stadium suitable for international competitions and training standards was important.

In addition to the Pairc Ui Choaimh project CubicM3 have a diverse range of envirotech solutions which cements their status as a sustainable provider of renewable engineering products.  CubicM3    supply and install rain water harvesting systems both commercially and privately, with clients including Dublin Zoo and their Solar PV division have won a number of contracts on new residential housing projects and schools.

With all this on offer, it’s no surprise to see business beginning to boom.

“We’re definitely seeing a pick up,” Stephen enthused. “During the recession we were concentrating a lot on schools and healthcare. Now, we’re getting into a lot of housing, which is coming back, and work with multi-nationals and pharmaceuticals. It’s getting to the stage now where we have nearly doubled our employees in the last two years.”

He goes on to add: “We’ve been doing a lot of housing developments recently and quite a lot in retail with discount supermarket stores. CubicM3 have done some work on prisons lately as well. So we’ve a very wide variety of projects under our belt.”

So what has CubicM3’s clients choosing them over other competitors?

Stephen feels the fact that they offer customers “the complete package” has a lot to do with it.

“On the drainage side, a lot of it is product driven because StormTech® is so well known,” he said.

“We also offer our clients design and specialist installation which allows us to give them a detailed and efficient service at a combined cost. It’s a full turnkey package with CubicM3.”
