Based in Barrowhouse, Co. Laois, Elite Home Builders is a multi-faceted operation which has earned a stellar reputation for high-quality construction in Laois, Kildare and beyond. It has come a long way since Roger Grufferty (MIEI) started out building new bespoke one-off homes in 2015. While this is a service Roger and his team continue to provide, it has been outgrown by commercial works. To this end, O’Brien Fine Foods is its main client.
“I studied civil engineering in IT Carlow (now SETU) and qualified in 2001,” the Elite Home Builders founder and managing director explains.
“When the recession hit in 2008, I went to work in Australia before returning home in 2014. I set up this business the following year and haven’t looked back since. We originally specialised in one-off new house builds before evolving into commercial builds.
“I got a call out of the blue from O’Brien Fine Foods about five years ago asking if we would be interested in doing some work for them and we’ve been contracted to them ever since. We enjoy an excellent relationship with their capital projects manager Cepta Marchant who keeps the work coming our way.
“While commercial projects now account for a large part of our business, we still offer new house builds and are currently carrying out our first development for ourselves, which is a three-bed terrace development in McDonnell Drive, Athy. We’re doing very few extensions or renovations at the moment, but it’s something we’re still open to.”
Elite Home Builders undertakes a variety of works for O’Brien Fine Foods, which is a family-run business specialising in the manufacture and marketing of award-winning premium meats. Headquartered in Timahoe, Co. Kildare and employing over 600 people, O’Brien Fine Foods are the leading cooked meats producer in Ireland, with a growing presence in the UK through its Bearfields business. Also the parent company of Brady Family (Ham) and Green Foods, O’Brien Fine Foods supplies both branded and private label ranges from three manufacturing sites with full BRC accreditation.
“We carry out all sorts of work for them at their sites in Timahoe and Rathowen, Co. Westmeath, and Leeming Bar in the UK. Last year, for example, we demolished an old pie factory in Leeming Bar which is now a ham production facility. We have our own plant which includes diggers ranging from three to 13 tonnes, a dumper and other equipment.
“We also recently completed concrete works for a confidential client in Blanchardstown. So we’re not tied to just one client in the commercial sector.”
Elite Home Builders has its own inhouse architect in Roger’s brother, John Paul, who designs, plans and supervises home building projects. The family-run business also offers percolation tests for residential clients and soakaway tests for commercial customers.

His main suppliers are Doyle’s of the Shamrock in Carlow, Chadwicks in Kilkenny, Griffin Hawe Ltd in Athy and Roadstone.

“We’d be nothing without our small crew of direct employees and subcontractors. It’s a real team effort,” Roger stresses.
