With a proven track record for delivering a comprehensive suite of solutions to the healthcare / retirement home sector over the past two decades, Elmcrest Developments are firmly established as industry-leading specialists in their chosen field of construction expertise.
Headquartered in the heritage town of Kells in the Royal County, Elmcrest Developments provide a complete range of new build, refurbishment and construction solutions to the hospital/ healthcare / retirement home sector across Meath and neighbouring counties.
Boasting 20 years of expertise in cutting-edge construction and engineering, the Elmcrest team pride themselves on being highly adaptable – a prerequisite in meeting the ever-evolving demands of the modern world! – and can take on literally any construction or refurbishment job large or small within a hospital, healthcare or retirement home setting – from fixing a burst pipe to a roof repair / replacement or the construction or reconfiguration of new wards.
CIRI-registered and SafeT-certified, all the necessary systems and structures are engaged to ensure professional solutions are delivered seamlessly, often within a live working environment, invariably adhering to the highest standards of safety, hygiene, infection control and containment in a fully collaborative manner, consistently achieving optimal results.
Steadfastly operating to the most exacting standards in a specialised and critical sector of the construction industry, from routine maintenance through to complete new build projects, Elmcrest Developments can count the HSE, Ireland’s best-known and busiest hospitals, and largest privately operated retirement homes amongst their impressive list of repeat clients.
“All our work now is predominantly within the healthcare sector – construction or refurbishment work in hospitals for the HSE, retirement homes and also one-off renovations of multi-adaptable homes,” confirms Shane Doyle. “We also do small, one-off jobs in healthcare and are on the framework in various counties such as Cavan, Louth, Meath, Monaghan and Dublin.”
One recently-completed project for the HSE was at St Joseph’s Community Nursing Unit in Trim, where Elmcrest renovated the ceiling in the chapel and installed new stained-glass windows. Meanwhile, at St Davnet’s Hospital in Monaghan town, another six-figure project, this one of external works, comprised replacing a flat roof in conjunction with new cast-iron gullets, guttering, fascia and soffit on a three-storey building.
Working on behalf of the HSE, Elmcrest have had a steady presence at the most high-profile hospitals in the capital for 15 years and counting.
“The nature of the projects tends to vary widely, from renovating wards to emergency works,” Shane continues. “We are highly adaptable to take on any job and, as a PSCS contractor, can take on largescale projects from start through to completion or as a subcontractor…..
“To achieve this, we work hand in hand with a team of proven subcontractors with whom we enjoy excellent long-term working relationships. We all know each other and work well together. We’ve been around long enough now to know who’s good to deal with, and we only work with the very best.”
Elmcrest Developments generate direct employment for an exceptional, vastly-experienced in-house team of 19, which is supplemented by the aforementioned network of tried and trusted subbies. “We pride ourselves on the quality of our own men,” Shane confirms.
“We have a really good team of guys working for us and there’s a nice blend of skills. We carry a good balance of all-rounders, most of whom have strong carpentry skills and can take on a large variety of work on site.
“The subcontractors would be like an extension of our own team and we work with them regularly. One of these is Advanced Flooring, while we also subcontract all the mechanical and electrical work to Clarke Electrical, JVE Electrical, Evan Henry and Breffni Mechanical to name a few.
In keeping with their status at the forefront of the healthcare construction / refurbishment marketplace, Elmcrest Developments have many strengths that have facilitated their growth into a contractor of choice. Featuring highly amongst these is the sheer adaptability of the service offerings:
“You need to be adaptable because no two jobs are alike,” states Shane Doyle. “You would think that our work might be repetitive but every project brings its own specific challenges – not least within the hospital setting, whereby infection control plays a huge part in how we deliver the project.
“We must do all work to a high standard keeping works clean throughout the project, which requires different systems. To accommodate and facilitate your client, it’s important that you can carry out a wide array of work and have the capacity to adapt to whatever unique requirements each individual project brings.
“On top of that, of course you need to have good relationships with your subcontractors. We all know each other well, know each other’s faces, and are very comfortable working together.”
Have the directors/management team – Shane, Brendan O’Connor and Danny O’Sullivan – considered the possibility of perhaps expanding into other sectors of the construction industry, such as residential, for example? “We’re not set up for that at the minute, so no,” says the former. “I don’t believe there’s value in it at the moment, so it’s not something we’re looking at.”
With a healthy order book ahead of them as we move into the heart of 2023, Elmcrest Developments are in a strong position going forward. “We have at least six months of work in front of us, which is pretty good for a company of our size,” Shane concludes.
“We’re not targeting growth for the sake of it or trying to scale up too quickly. Thankfully, there is strong demand for our services and we’re held in high regard by architects as well as our clients. We’ll grow the business organically, in a controlled manner, adding people when we feel it is feasible to do so. But we’re going to keep it tight and focus our attention on providing our clients with the most efficient and professional services possible.”
