With offices in Dublin, Galway and Waterford – and a fourth branch imminent in London – Malone O’Regan have established themselves as leading engineering and environmental consultants, with a nationwide reach. We popped into their Clonskeagh, Dublin 14 HQ and touched base with recently-appointed managing director Eugene Kelly to find out more.
Malone O’Regan is one of Ireland’s premier engineering and environmental consultancy practices, boasting almost 40 years’ experience in all aspects of civil engineering, structural engineering, marine engineering, process & manufacturing and project management.
Since the company’s inception in Dublin in 1978, they have forged a stellar reputation, delivering reliable, cost-efficient solutions with efficiency, courtesy and accuracy to a wide range of complex projects, including roads, bridges, port and harbour infrastructure, food, beverage and manufacturing plants, and commercial, retail and institutional buildings.
Malone O’Regan pride themselves on providing professional services to clients in the planning, design, construction and management of development related projects, offering the full range of engineering (civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and process) and environmental management and consultancy services to the private and public sectors.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of local planning and development environments enables Malone O’Regan to meet project and budget targets and they deal with all clients – both Irish and international – at partner level on every project. State-of-the-art information and communication technology coupled with industry standard software and hardware ensures compatibility with other professionals working on each project.
Having provided professional engineering and environmental consultancy services to high-profile partners such as Lakeland Dairies, Dublin Port, Glanbia Ingredients, Waterford Crystal and Danone – to mention just a handful – down through the years, Malone O’Regan enjoy excellent relationships with the leading main contractors and developers nationwide as well as the OPW and government departments.
Recently, they provided their expertise to OPW / BAM courthouse / refurbishment projects in Drogheda, Mullingar, Letterkenny, Wexford and Waterford. “We’ve been associated with BAM going back to the early ‘90s and have done a lot of PPP and design & build work with them,” reveals Eugene Kelly, who has been with the firm since March 1994 and succeeded the retiring Liam Fennelly as MD in 2016.
“We’re a long-standing company, going into our 39th year, and hopefully there are at least 39 more to come,” continues Eugene, who is joined in the boardroom by fellow directors John Norris, Brian Mackey, Pat Rohan and Emer Sharkey. “We’ve always had a very diverse portfolio of clients and that has stood to us.
“We had a good legacy of work in the food processing sector and that helped us through the recession. Also, we didn’t have as much residential projects on our books as others when the downturn struck.”
At the peak of the boom, Malone O’Regan employed 60 people and, post-recession, the number has since rose back up to 56, with steady growth continuing. This growth has been fuelled not just by a general uplift in the economy but also by excellent management, skilled, experienced and highly-qualified staff and Malone O’Regan’s status as a go-to consultancy firm.
Some of the key OPW projects to which professional consultancy services have been provided include the substantial refurbishment of Monaghan Courthouse, which was completed in 2010, an extension to the EPA’s headquarters in Ardcavan, Wexford Garda Divisional HQ, a large archaeological investigation at Church Street / Hammond Lane (which will be the site of the new Family Court), the new Forensic Science Laboratory at Backweston and social welfare offices in Tallaght (one of their first OPW jobs).
Malone O’Regan also worked on PPP projects at St Mary’s College Dundalk, County. Louth and St Joseph’s Secondary School, Tulla, County Clare for BAM Ireland and have longstanding relationships with major food processing companies Danone, Glanbia and Lakeland Dairies. “A large percentage of our work comes from repeat business and referrals,” the MD confirms.
Regarding his vision for the company going forward, Eugene continues: “To develop the commercial side of the business in Dublin in particular and to leverage the expertise we have in food processing to move into food/pharma, biopharma and more high-tech industries. These areas are key and will attract a lot of foreign direct investment over the next four years and beyond.
“Dublin is key to the future of the country,” Eugene concludes. “That’s where most of the business is going to be, particularly if financial services companies decide to relocate to Ireland post-Brexit.”
