Set up in 1960, Abbey Electrical Services in Naas, Co Kildare has established itself as a leader in electrical work in the domestic, commercial and industrial sectors. Managing Director Philip McAuley jnr told us more about the business which has been growing its industrial maintenance over the last number of years.
Business is good right now at Abbey Electrical Services and for Philip McAuley jnr, fellow director Jerome Delmer and staff members, the hope is that things will continue to stay that way.
The company turned 57 years old in January and the hope is that they’ll be celebrating their 60th with increased staff numbers, as well as even more projects and clients.
Right now things are steady according to Philip, who has been involved with the company which his father helped to find for 35 years now. He explained that a couple of things have changed since that time.
“From 1975 to 2005 we were based along the Dublin Road in Naas and since ’05 we’ve been here along the Kilcullen Road in Naas,” Philip outlined.
“The company was founded in 1960 by Michael Cronin and Phil McAuley snr, my father. They had worked together in the largest employer in the town ‘Naas Cotton Mills’. My father was the maintenance electrician he would have served his time in England after World War II and Mr Cronin was stores manager in Naas, where Michael’s from.
“My father’s originally from Moate in Co Westmeath and after stepping down he took the decision to retire back there.”
Throughout the last five decades Abbey Electrical Services in Naas have been providing a full spectrum of quality electrical services to all of Co Kildare, ranging from domestic and commercial to industrial work.
The company’s work encompasses a wide variety of services including all domestic maintenance and installation. They aim to provide a full range of services to all of their clients, with safety in mind and at reasonable rates.
The changing of the guard at Abbey Electrical Services arrived 11 years ago when Philip and Jerome Delmer took over and together they’ve helped to usher the business into a new era.
“I joined the company in 1981 and myself and Jerome Delmer are the two directors now,” said Philip.
“Jerome would have joined the company back in 1967 and his two sons Trevor and Mark both work here. We have seven electricians here and three admin staff, so a total of 10 here.”
These days all 10 electricians are required in order to keep up with demand and members of staff are known for being helpful, knowledgeable and trustworthy. They are also qualified certifiers.
As Philip explained, Abbey Electrical Services are willing to take on any kind of project.
“Business is quite steady right now,” he said. “We do an awful lot of industrial maintenance here and we’re not snobs either because we take on a lot of different projects – big or small.
“We have an awful lot of customers on our books during, so right now things are just ticking along nicely. Being based in Kildare we do a lot of work for the equine industry and the local racecourse as well.
“We also work for Local Authorities, which sees us working on all kinds of projects.”
He added: “The recession didn’t hit us that hard because of the clients that we have we weren’t aligned to the building industry, so the downturn didn’t hit us as badly as others. Thankfully, things seemed to have turned around for everyone now.
“We’ve always prided ourselves on our service here,” said Philip. “We feel that the service that we provide for our customers is number one and it’s the reason why they continue to come back to us rather than go to other competitors.
“At the moment we’ve a couple of nice projects on,” he added.
“We work alongside our clients like a consultant and they find us reliable. I think that’s another reason why they choose us first. We have a numbers of projects coming up now that are going to keep us busy.”
It’s also reassuring for clients to know that their work is being carried out by a registered contractor when they come to Abbey Electrical Services.
The Industry Regulation Body is Safe Electric formerly RECI who won the right from the January 1, 2016. Abbey Electrical Services has been a member for RECI since 1992 and have been inspected year on year since and has always met the highest standards required.
Abbey Electrical Services also carry out PAT Testing (portable appliance testing). This is necessary as most of their clients would have a lot of hand held equipment. They need this carried out for insurance purposes mostly but also it encourages good house keeping.
“A lot of insurance companies would ask their clients for that, all of our staff qualified with certificates as well. We’re PAT qualified for four or five years now,” said Philip.
