A traditional Irish-owned family business that has been synonymous with delivering complete, industry-leading mechanical solutions for eleven years and counting, Phoenix Mechanical celebrated on the double at the 2025 Plumbing and Heating Awards.
Since its inception in 2014, Phoenix Mechanical has – through the consistent provision of exceptional services – established itself as a premier mechanical engineering contractor, delivering an impressive portfolio of high-quality projects for a who’s who of clients.
It was no surprise to see the company receive due industry recognition at the 2025 Plumbing and Heating Awards in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Blanchardstown on Friday, November 7th, where Phoenix Mechanical picked up not one but two prestigious awards on the night.
Specialists in commercial, industrial and domestic air conditioning, heating, ventilation, rainwater harvesting, heat pumps, solar energy, soils & waste, fire protection and gas services installations, Phoenix Mechanical took home the District Heating Project of the Year Award for Sports Science Building, TU, Dublin as well as the Commercial Project of the Year over €1m Award for Ruby Molly Hotel, Dublin. Not a bad night’s work at all and managing director Gary Brennan was justifiably elated to receive such lofty recognition:
“We were absolutely thrilled,” he told Building Ireland. “It was a great night and a lovely endorsement for all the hard work that’s gone in to this company over the years. We were highly commended at the plumbing and heating awards back in 2019 but this was our first time to win an award, and to win two made it extra special.”
Priding itself on providing professional services with a personal touch, Phoenix Mechanical is a company imbued with traditional values and an ethos of absolute customer care, invariably leaving behind a good product every time and acutely cognisant of the fact that reputation is everything in every sector of the construction industry.
“Blood, sweat and tears are the prime ingredients in everything we do,” Gary attests. “We are completely committed to and passionate about what we do and this genuine enthusiasm shows through in every project we work on.
“We operate very much off old-fashioned values of honesty, integrity and pride in our work. We have been very fortunate to have been able to assemble a team that shares those same values, as well as working regularly with subcontractors and specialists who have a like-minded approach.
“We care about what we do, we enjoy it, and we consider ourselves fortunate that a lot of the people we work with are similar to us. We’re obviously very reliant on repeat business, so it is paramount that you leave a good product behind if you want to get the next project. It’s a busy period but the market is still a very small one and you have to maintain your good name.
“The last ten years have been so busy that managing our growth has been a challenge, but one we’ve dealt with quite well. We didn’t take on too much work or let things get out of control. Instead, we’ve grown without compromising on the values that got us started in the first place or the quality of our work. And we’ve always got the right people in to make sure any growth we experienced along the way was sustainable.”
Chosen as District Heating Project of the Year for Phoenix Mechanical, the Sports Science Building, TU comprises teaching laboratories (a fitness suite and an exercise medicine laboratory), a sports hall, two lecture theatres, three classrooms and a grass playing pitch.
The building’s heating and hot water demand are part of a district heating project – the first of its kind in Ireland where waste heat from the local Amazon data centre is being used to supply heat to new and existing South Dublin County Council buildings and the TU Dublin-Tallaght campus through this local district heating network.
The district heating pipework was brought into the plant room, where the pipework was extended to a district heating heat exchanger unit which then provides the building with heating and hot water. The large double sports hall is heated with radiant panels, radiators are installed throughout, fresh air is brought into the building by two high efficiency rotary wheel air handling units located on the roof, and a rainwater harvesting system was installed to provide water to the toilets.
Meanwhile, The Ruby Molly Hotel – Commercial Project of the Year over €1m – is a new hotel with 272 bedrooms, with bar and staff areas on the ground and basement levels. Levels 1-7 are bedrooms with a galley and house-keeping rooms at each level. Each bedroom was fitted with ducted AC unit and local HRU ducted to the outside.
At ground floor level is the main entrance and front reception. The bar, café and buffet areas are also located on the ground floor. The main kitchen and staff canteen are back of house on the ground floor.
A central plant room houses new high efficiency heat pumps for heating to central areas including underfloor heating in the reception and bar areas. There are also heat pumps for the hot water system with back up gas fired water heaters.
Two smoke shafts were installed as part of the mechanical install. 198 fire/smoke dampers were installed as part of the ventilation system with a full central damper control system installed. Three dry risers were installed with chrome inlets to each.
Delivering high quality installations through skilled planning, budgeting, execution and management of mechanical construction projects, Phoenix Mechanical has grown incrementally and sustainably since its genesis in 2014 to today generate direct employment for 40 onsite plus eight more in the office, supplemented by an extended team of trusted subcontractors and specialists.
“We’re very grateful and humbled to have received the two awards,” Gary adds. “I’m under no illusions because I know there were a lot of others who also did outstanding work but didn’t come away with an award, so we’re honoured to have been chosen.
“Up to this time the Ruby Molly Hotel was our largest project to date, at €4.5m and has allowed us to secure more work around and above this value. While the Sports Science Building, TU wasn’t as massive, it was very involved – and a historic project as it was the first in Europe to use rejected heat generated by an Amazon data centre, which we piped into the building. The Ruby Molly Hotel was a very quick turnaround – a brand new 272-bedroom hotel done in just twelve months.”
Phoenix Mechanical have been providing high-quality, award-winning mechanical services installations since 2014, successfully completing projects for a wide range of private and public bodies throughout Ireland. Their client portfolio and volume of repeat business with these clients is testament to the dedication and expertise of their staff for the consistent delivery of exceptional projects across all sectors.
