“Quality, health & safety and retention of clients,” was director Barry O’Shea’s reply when asked: ‘what are the key attributes that the company prides itself on?’.
Barry joined the company in 2002, and joined the board of directors six years ago following the retirement of his father Mick and, speaking to Building Ireland, he revealed that these attributes have allowed Moston Construction grow organically as a company, to generate new and repeat business and to meet fresh challenges with confidence.
“We’ve worked for St Vincent’s University Hospital for the guts of 20 years. Other key clients include the ESB, Beaumont Hospital, Siemens in Swords, and Trinity College. Strong relationships mean everything to us and lead to a lot of repeat business.”
Moston is very proud of its proven ability to deliver projects for clients and their design teams within budget, on time and constructed to the highest quality specifications, whilst accommodating specific requirements and alterations during any stage of the construction process.
Their professional management of projects and flexibility during the life time of projects evolves from working closely with clients, design teams and sub-contractors, maintaining exceptionally high standards and by doing so, securing many new and repeat clients.
A recent addition to their portfolio of successfully completed projects was a Biomedical Sciences Building at Trinity College. The project entailed a change of use of 612 sqm floor area at second floor level from commercial office use to university use and all associated ancillary works.
“It was a high pressure, fast-tracked project which we successfully completed on time and under budget,” Barry revealed. “We worked closely with Trinity College and Turner Townsend on cost management and cost control and we built a lot of trust by bringing a complex project like that in under budget. We had a great team on the project, with Mick Murphy as Contracts Manager and Kevin Kelly as Project Manager, and they worked tirelessly with Coady Architects to deliver a high quality finished product for Trinity College”.
“Another milestone project we recently finished was the ESB Heritage Archive Building, which is located in Finglas. It’s a brand new bespoke facility which houses all the ESB’s archives since 1927. We started on site in June 2018 and finished last July. As with the Biomedical Sciences Building, this project was successfully delivered under budget”.
Moston Construction’s current workload includes an extension to the Santry Sports Surgery Clinic, which includes two new Ultra Clean Ventilated (UCV) theatres with 20 new bed spaces, an office fit-out at UCD’s Tierney Building and an extension to the indoor tennis courts at Castleknock Lawn Tennis Club, complete with viewing gallery and communal plaza at the front of the building.
“Thankfully, we are currently very busy and long may it continue,” Barry commented. “Like everyone else in the industry, we experienced very slack times during the period 2009 to 2015 but business has picked up considerably since then.
“In fact, we’re currently growing at a rate of adding three to five new employees every year. Turnover wise, we’re growing at a quicker rate than that. We’ve seen a significant increase in our turnover in the last four years and increased our workforce by 30 to 35% in that period.
“We employ 30 in total and also rely a lot on our sub-contractors. We have built up a great team over the past 20 to 25 years and, at the end of the day, we’re only as strong as our sub-contractors.”
Looking ahead to the future, Barry hopes that the company’s upward curve will continue but he is not taking anything for granted.
“In general, I’d be optimistic about the future but, obviously, there are wider economic concerns such as Brexit. Whatever happens there, I would hope that the position the company is in now, coupled with the experience of the last recession, will stand us in good stead into the future.”
