‘If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right’

Taking its name from a small lake just outside Maam Cross at the gateway to Connemara, Shindilla Construction Ltd is an exceptional residential building firm renowned for once-off, tailored, bespoke and beautiful homes.

Specialising in new builds up to 5,000 sq. ft., refurbishments / remodels and extensions, Shindilla Construction in Woodstock, Galway was founded in 2007 by Walter O’Flaherty, a second-generation builder who prides himself on providing a quality product. The company’s commitment to quality has led to it only using qualified professional subcontractors. From stonemasons to plumbers, he insists on only the best to ensure clients end up with a home way beyond their expectations.

“I get great satisfaction from doing things right,” the managing director says.

“My father always said, ‘if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right’. That’s become my motto as well. It’s great to be able to stand back and admire a job you’ve just finished. We take great pride in our work and treat every build as if it were our own.”

Walter’s passion for construction was instilled in him by his aforementioned father Tony. Before retiring a few years ago, Tony built several apartments in the Salthill and Knocknacarra area of Galway City as well as the clubhouse at Barna Golf Club. A different career path beckoned for Walter when he graduated from college with a degree in Business Studies, but he soon returned to his building roots after moving to the US.

“I worked in Alaska, Boston and Chicago,” explains the affable Galway man, whose wife Lorraine is also involved in the business.

“Whilst in Alaska, I worked for a building company where I learned so much and got a great skillset. It has served me well since coming home and going out on my own. I bought a house called Shindilla Cottage, which is named after Lough Shindilla, and decided to name the company after that. We still run the office from it.”

Walter has learned the value of completing projects with superior high-end finishes on time and within budget. Using his vast experience, he advises clients on what direction they need to take to make their dream home a reality. A CIRI-registered company, Shindilla Construction places a strong emphasis on conservation, looking at ways to make your home more efficient while also protecting the environment.

Outstanding workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money, Health & Safety and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of Shindilla Construction. From concept to completion, Walter and his small but dedicated team are with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.

Whether your next project is a new build, renovation or extension, Shindilla Construction’s one-stop shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The Galway contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from design teams and scores of satisfied customers.

By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with its engineers and architects, and using only the very best building products, this fully insured and compliant family business is able to deliver the highest quality construction to its clients.

“We are known for having a very good relationship with tradespeople, suppliers and designers in and around Moycullen where I come from,” Walter continues.

“From Dominic Lydon Steel, TC Estimating, Billamore Kitchens, Tom Lydon, Lydon’s Carpet Centre and Topopal to Eoin McQuinn Plumbing & Heating, Derek Conneely Tiling, Small Crane Architects, Long Life Structures, T O’Higgins Homevalue Hardware and Brooks, we have an excellent working relationship with them all.

“We also have an outstanding reputation for maintaining relationships with subcontractors and, more to the point, paying them on time. We run a good business where everything is open and transparent.”

Site preparation, foundation work, structure and finishes are all part of the service provided by Shindilla Construction. Current / recent projects include a 3,000 sq. ft. home finished to a high standard, new one-off builds in Collinamuck and Furbo as well as three remodels.

“Business is good and we have a lot of stuff in the pipeline,” says Walter, who recently carried out a major revamp of his own home.

“The trend is towards open plan kitchens which incorporate the living area. This makes perfect sense as the kitchen is where people spend most of their time. With extensions, we use our expertise to build single room extensions to large home extensions. A smart and well-designed house renovation can be as effective as a new build, giving you more space and a fresher look.

“With every project, we guide you step-by-step from your initial thoughts right through to turning the key on the door. Above all, we always listen to our clients and take on board what they are looking for.”

Despite expressing concerns about the shortage of skilled labour in the sector and rising material costs, Walter’s business is in a good place. As Shindilla Construction continues to go from strength to strength, he would like to take this opportunity to thank his clients, suppliers and design teams for their unwavering support as well as his highly-skilled crew and subcontractors for their hard work and dedication.
