Fronted by brothers Darren and David Byrne, Mullacurry Construction is a County Louth based building and civil engineering company with an exceptional track record for delivering a wide range of projects across both the private and public sectors. Building Ireland travelled to the Wee County and interrupted Darren’s busy schedule to find out more.
In the seven short years since its inception, Mullacurry Construction has successfully completed a diverse and impressive array of magnificent projects, specialising in delivering not only turnkey residential and commercial buildings (new builds, extensions and renovations) but also providing professional civil engineering services.
Priding themselves on completing construction projects safely, on time, within budget and to client specification, Mullacurry Construction invariably deliver innovative solutions, engineering ingenuity and professional construction management whilst adhering to the highest safety and quality standards.
Their innate versatility, professionalism, attention to detail and client-focussed approach has seen this outstanding family-run company – which operates out of Dromin in County Louth – emerge as a building and civil engineering contractor of choice serving a who’s who of public and private clients on a diverse range of projects across the north east and beyond.
Ultimately, it is the unique combined specialist expertise of the founders / directors that defines Mullacurry Construction.
“David is a carpenter with 20 years’ experience, and I am a chartered civil engineer with over 15 years’ experience. We put our heads together to set up our own construction company in 2016,” reflects co-owner Darren Byrne.
“We are both hands on and between us, with the skills and experience we have, we can prepare every job together and see it through to completion. We like to involve the client – and their architect and engineer – from the start and we pride ourselves on the quality workmanship and management we provide.
“We project manage every job right through to completion and, regardless of the size and nature of the project, we take a collaborative approach in planning the job, involving everybody in executing it. At the end of the day, it boils down to having the knowledge and expertise as well as being able to design, plan, carry out and project manage all the works ourselves. We are always directly involved in every project, and we leave no stone unturned in making sure that the work is finished to the highest building and civil engineering standards and to the client’s complete satisfaction.”
Mullacurry Construction boasts vast experience building residential homes. Their project portfolio includes new builds, extensions and renovations, with all residential construction projects adhering meticulously to customer requirements and build expectations. David, Darren and their team offer a complete turnkey service, providing project management of the build from concept stage, design and planning through to completion and handover, ensuring a transparent, seamless and stress-free service.
With a wealth of experience in complex civil engineering projects, Mullacurry Construction can count Inland Waterways Association of Ireland amongst their impressive list of public clients. As part of the Boyne Navigation Restoration Project, for example, they were contracted to manufacture and install lock gates at Staleen Lock in Co. Meath.
For this specialist project, Darren carried out an extensive survey of the existing lock using a Trimble S6 Total Station and, with AutoCAD, drew up detailed design drawings for the new lock gates, which were subsequently manufactured in-house by David from Ekki timber and transported to site.
Site enabling works were carried out to allow construction vehicular access to site. Silt & environmental control measures were implemented in order to overpump the lock to facilitate the works. Mullacurry Construction coordinated the lifting of the new lock gates into position using a tracked telescopic crane. Throughout, their project team worked closely with the Boyne Navigation Restoration Committee to successfully complete the project.
One of the great strengths of Mullacurry Construction – who currently generate direct full-time employment for a team of six in addition to a tried-and-trusted crew of subcontractors – is that they can offer a comprehensive range of building and civil engineering solutions.
“We like to cover everything from private residential work including new builds, extensions and renovations to public sector work,” Darren confirms.
“We also complete commercial projects, including school and office refurbishments. We’re in the process of refurbishing a gym hall in a school and have recently finished a civils project demolishing an existing boundary wall along the interface of two housing estates in Balbriggan. We constructed new pedestrian crossing points, steps & walkways, road pavements, line markings and associated landscaping works. Our site team successfully completed this highly sensitive project through good public relations and communications on the ground. In addition, we’ve started working on pyrite removal in existing homes.
“My brother, Colin, is also a civil engineer and working in conjunction with him we provide engineering services including project management, design, surveying, and setting out.”
At the time of writing, Mullacurry Construction were working on a bungalow extension (and refurb of the existing building) and had just been awarded two new build houses by Fingal County Council – one detached, one semi-detached -as part of Project Ireland 2040.
“These houses are two new builds, one in an unused green area at the end of a housing estate, the other will be built in replacement of an existing derelict shop. This project involves the removal of asbestos materials and demolition of the structure,” concludes Darren.
“We generally have a good mix of both private and public sector works ongoing at any one time with a diverse portfolio of projects. Thankfully we have a busy order book going into the new year. Our goal for the future is to continue to strive & deliver excellence in every job we undertake and to expand our portfolio as specialist contractors of choice without losing sight of our core values, quality and customer satisfaction.”
