“It’s quality over quantity” at Paul Breslin Construction

20 Aug , 2024

Based in Brenter, Co Donegal, Paul Breslin Construction Ltd specialises in new builds, renovations and refurbishments for its clients. Building Ireland caught up with Managing Director Paul Breslin to hear all about the company – from its origins to the state of business at the moment.

Since becoming a limited venture six years ago, Paul Breslin Construction Ltd has continually strived to provide its customers with the full range of construction services with a focus on medium sized jobs.

Today, the business operates with three full-time staff from its base in the south of Donegal and is very much the go-to building company when it comes to the construction needs of its clientele.

Paul Breslin started out in the construction game working alongside his father Paddy and, after gaining the necessary experience, took the decision to go out on his own and has since developed expertise in new builds, renovation and refurbishment projects.

Building Ireland touched base with the Tir Chonaill County native to discuss some of his company’s current projects and his overall hopes going forward.

“I’ve been operating myself since 2009 and this company was set-up as limited in 2018,” Paul outlined.

“My father (Paddy) used to be involved but he’s retired now and he actually got me into building in the first place.

“I finished school and did a carpentry apprenticeship and always wanted to set-up my own business here in Donegal.

“I spent a few years working in different places, including Dublin and London for a period, and started up in Donegal when the recession came. When I started things were very slow, there was a lot of long hours for very little reward but, over the years, we built it up.

“I did degree in Construction Management in 2015 and that kind of helped to get public works projects and things kind of took off then. Three years later, I formed the limited company and we’ve been doing public works jobs like school and community centre extensions.

“We do some high-end stuff as well, so there’s a nice mix of jobs.”

With expertise in new builds, renovations, and refurbishments, Paul Breslin Construction is committed to transforming domestic and commercial properties into spaces that exceed expectations.

The team in Brenter understand that building a new property is an exciting endeavour. Whether a residential home or a commercial building, its skilled professionals will work closely with the client to bring their vision to life. From initial design concepts to the final touches, the company ensures every detail is carefully considered and executed perfectly. It has a commitment to craftsmanship and quality that is unrivalled, guaranteeing customers a result that they will be proud of for years.

All of that considered, it’s no surprise to hear that business is good these days at Paul Breslin Construction where the focus from ‘Day One’ has always been about delivering quality projects.

“It has been a slow progress since 2009 and every year has been marginally better than the last,” said the Managing Director.

“Over time there’s been small gains and we’re proud of the work that we’ve done. We’ve never been busier than we are at the moment, to be honest, so we’re just trying to manage the growth and we’re quite conservative in the projects that we take on.

“We do focus on the detail and try to deliver a good quality of project. It’s quality over quantity. I don’t think you can do both, you have to focus on one.”

Right now, Paul and his team are immersed in a number of projects in the country’s north west region, including the renovation of a 100-year-old cottage which is close to them in Teelin.

There are, of course, a couple of new builds on the books as well as a high-end renovation job in Donegal Town which was recently handed over to the client.

Other works include renovations of a local school and a council house project in Kilcar, bringing the total of on-going projects for the company up to five.

So, all of that considered, the burning question is what has been the secret behind the success of Paul Breslin Construction Ltd to date?

How has a small start-up grown into what is now a thriving construction venture with an excellent reputation among its clients?

“To be honest, I still feel like the new kid on the block a wee bit because I’m competing against second generation builders that have been in it for 20 or 30 years,” said the Managing Director.

“But I think people see the work that we’ve done and it’s really just word of mouth that has carried us. A lot of them see what you do online and once they see some nice stuff then know you’re going to do a good job for them.”

As well as that, Paul Breslin Construction always maintains open lines of communication with clients throughout the entire construction process, as it feels good communication and collaboration are crucial in delivering outstanding results.

It’s a practice which has certainly stood to the business to this point.

Looking at the months ahead for the company, Paul says he’s eager for things to continue moving in the same direction as they have been, with hopes of some more steady expansion along the way.

“We’re trying to manage growth, so we’re not one bit worried about not having work.

“We’re trying to pick and choose our jobs a bit more carefully now. At the start, we were just tendering for everything but we just tender for the jobs that we know we can do well now and clients that we’d like to work for.

“We’re optimistic for the next 12 months and for the next number of years,” he concluded.

Great to hear.
