“I’m a carpenter by trade and when we set up the business 10 years ago, we did a lot of roofing and structural work. With the country being in the middle of a recession at the time, we put our hand to everything and anything before things started to pick up and we branched into larger works. We carried out our first commercial school project in 2017 and have continued to go from strength to strength.
“I have eight lads with me who are a mix of carpenters, block-layers,skilled operatives, machinery operators and engineers. We sub-contract work to other tradesmen such as plasterers, electricians and plumbers. By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with leading architects and engineers, and using only the very best building products, we’re able to deliver the highest quality construction to our customers.”

“Schools now account for a large part of our business,” he explains.
“Rockfield National School in Coolaney was our first school project in 2017. Since April 2019, we have also carried out extensions to Ardkeeran National School in Riverstown and Colaiste Iascaigh in Easkey. The Ardkeeran job was a classroom / staffroom extension, while in Colaiste Iascaigh we built a new state-of-the-art science lab, two new classrooms and also carried out renovations to the existing building. We collaborated with McCabe Architects from Donegal town on the Rockfield and Ardkeeran projects, and with Rhatigan Architects from Sligo on the Colaiste Iascaigh job.”
John Kennedy Construction also has an impressive track record in delivering sports pitches, civil works, concrete works and farm buildings. The contractor has an array of plant and machinery to cater for everything from drainage and site works to mass concrete. Last year, John completed a new 2400m2 3g Astroturf pitch and community park in Coolaney, Co. Sligo.
“We completed all the bulk excavation, drainage, formworks, footpaths, floodlighting and car parks. We then teamed up with Premier Pitches (JNC Group) who completed the fencing and artificial surface of the pitch.
“Sports pitches, groundworks and civil works are all part of the service we provide. We have a lot of experience in farm buildings too and have been doing a fair bit of work for farmers lately.”
Like most businesses in Ireland, John Kennedy Construction was impacted by the COVID-19 lockdown earlier this year. However, business remains brisk and John is looking to 2021 with optimism.
“The biggest downside to COVID for us is the difficulty in obtaining materials for certain jobs. The virus slowed down the supply chain but, with a vaccine on the way, things are looking up and we’re hopeful that everything will be back to normal before too long.”
