Kilkenny’s ICF specialists

15 Aug , 2024

Based in Kilkenny City, MCF Projects Ltd is a family-run building contractor which is currently immersed in projects nationwide. Building Ireland learned all about this Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) specialist, which was shortlisted at this year’s Irish Construction Excellence Awards, from its Managing Director Dermot Flynn recently.

Since its inception in 2019, MCF Projects Ltd is a company which has grown from strength to strength to the point now where it has approximately 25 staff.

Today, it operates as a full-service boutique construction company specialising in Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF).

MCF Projects Ltd is headed up by Kildare native Dermot Flynn, whose brother Gabriel and nephew Martin both work on a full-time basis with the company which has evolved in the short span of just five years.

Building Ireland touched base with Dermot recently to find out about the ins and outs of this construction firm, as well as hear about its current projects and overall hopes going forward.

“The main part of the business is the Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF). We are reinforced concrete contractors also and are approved Kore Raft installers,” he outlined.

“As well as that, a lot of main contractors and developers have approached us to provide the full package, so we have included acrylic render and the Brick Slip as well to our services also.”

Whether it’s your first home or development clients can rest assured that Dermot and his experienced team provide a second-to-none service, along with trademark outstanding quality.

Since ‘Day One’, Dermot has placed a huge emphasis on quality workmanship having come from a carpentry, concrete and reinforcement structural background himself.

He had worked as a section foreman on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge in New Ross along the Kilkenny/Wexford border just before getting into ICF work and that took him on a whole new trajectory in the construction game.

Since going out on his own with MCF Projects Ltd, Dermot has watched it blossom and develop a reputation for carrying out excellent work within every project.

“It’s just going from strength to strength and, I suppose, what’s happening is that there’s a lot of new business there that has come from companies and contractors using ICF and seeing the benefits of it,” he stated.

“Usually, when we do one project for a company, it becomes a repeat client straight away. That’s what has us very busy at the minute and then we’ve got the new customers coming through as well.”

While much of the work in its early days was based in and around Kilkenny, today sees MCF Projects Ltd’s work bringing it into Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Tipperary and over to the west of Ireland as well.

“Our work is all over with one of our main projects recently being, Bishopslough, in Kilkenny city along with another project for Kilkenny County Council,” said Dermot.

“After that though, it’s across Dublin. We have a reinforced concrete project up in Howth and then we have 12, 3 story units in Malahide, which are finished to a high standard with Brick Slip and render.

He added: “We have 16 houses in Tipperary Town where we’re providing the developer with an overall package for the structure of the building from Kore Raft foundation to a rendered finish.”

Earlier this year, the company was shortlisted at the annual Irish Construction Excellence (ICE) Awards in its ‘Specialist or Specialist Services Contract Up to €1m’ for its work at Bishopslough.

This exclusive new development of spacious homes is located a short walk from Kilkenny City and, working alongside the client (Wallace Contracting), MCF Projects Ltd delivered a project which has now been recognised on a national scale.

The original and premier recognition of performance excellence for the contracting sector in Ireland, the ICE Awards Gala Event took place on May 24th at The Convention Centre Dublin.

So, all of that considered, the clear question is what has been the secret behind the success of MCF Projects Ltd to date?

How has a small start-up grown into a thriving construction venture with on-going projects nationwide in the space of five short years.

The way Dermot sees it, quality workmanship carried out in a timely manner goes a long way when it comes to this line of work.

“We try and keep the client happy while keeping to the clients programme,” said the Kildare man.

“We provide the best service possible and have systems that works. What’s crucial to us is that each project is carried out with quality work – that’s always been our main priority.

“There’s a lot of people that do ICF, but what sets us apart is our aim for perfection on each and every project.”

Looking at the months ahead for the business, Dermot says they’ll look to target growth and continue to keep clients satisfied along the way.

“We’re hoping to expand and things are going in the right direction for that to happen. We’re hoping to incorporate more RC with the ICF and just keep going the way we’re going,” the MD concluded.
