36 years have elapsed since Michael Kyne and Michael Clyne joined forces to establish Kyne & Clyne Engineering Consultants Ltd.
Mechanical, Electrical Engineers and Project Managers, the Galway headquartered company has built a reputation for delivering a first class service on all projects, regardless of scale. A focus on deliverability, added value and an attention to detail is gained from the combined experience of their 11-strong staff.
The two Michaels are actively involved in all aspects of the business, providing day to day project management and the wealth of knowledge they have accumulated down through the years of the various sectors the company operates in is a major plus in their favour.
“We set up as a partnership back in 1982,” Michael Kyne informed Building Ireland. “I had finished research work in UCG at the time while Michael Clyne had completed his contract with Press-O’Neill as a Project Engineer on the Auginish Alumina plant in Co. Limerick
“We had a decision to make – leave Ireland or do something. Michael suggested we set up a Mechanical Engineering company supporting American multinationals in Galway and that was the genesis of the partnership’s formation.
“The early years were busy because multi-nationals were setting up here in force at the time. We set our sights on them and worked hard to get the practice off the ground. After about four years, architects started to notice us and we diversified into schools, nursing homes, small factories, offices before gradually moving into shopping centres and hotels.”
Michael added: “We were more into the industrial engineering side of things early on but branched into services engineering, working in the commercial sector and supporting local architects.”
Offering a full range of Mechanical and Electrical services, Kyne & Clyne Engineering Consultants’ primary aim is to always provide a high quality professional service in support of their clients and professional colleagues.
As a consequence, they have successfully developed and maintained long term working relationships with their clients.
“We’re 36 years in business and we have a core of clients who have been with us for over 30 years,” Michael revealed. “We take great pride in the personal service we provide, we always work closely with our clients every step of the way but we also give them the breathing space they need to make a decision.
“The quality of our work speaks for itself and we have a very good drawing office. We have invested heavily in personnel and software and our clients can expect to receive comprehensive information at the tender stage.”
Kyne & Clyne’s highly-skilled workforce is a key ingredient in their successful formula…
“We like to keep our software up to date and remain at the cutting edge in terms of technology within reason. Software is a big thing in the company but training up our personnel is equally, if not more, important so they can get the job done without undue supervision. We’re fortunate to have high calibre people working for us.”
The two partners and their hard-working staff have a busy workload on their hands at the moment.
While providing M&E designs for architectural offices K&C occasionally take on the role of lead consultants in large projects when requested to do so. “We were the lead consultants, M&E consultants and project managers on a €12M on a new facility for Merit Medical in Galway in 2010 which was a great project in those difficult years.”
“We’ve a lot of work on with the HSE at the moment, we’ve projects in Mayo General Hospital and Galway University Hospital as well as a nursing home in Castlebar. We do work for the private medical sector as well, in the Galway Clinic and Bon Secours, Galway. We finished a large project in the Bon Secours last year.
“Overall, business is okay but the industrial side not as buoyant as it used to be. That can, however, all change. In this line of work you can go from not being too busy to being overloaded. That’s the nature of this business and I’d be confident more projects will come on stream this year.”
Kyne and Clyne had, as Michael puts it “a substantial presence” in Dublin, prior to the economic downturn. Are there are any plans in the pipeline to return to the capital in the future?
“We’ll probably look at the Dublin market again depending on our clients’ requirements. In saying that, Dublin is a bit crowded at the moment. We have the perfect base here in Galway and we’re optimistic about the future.
“We have a broad portfolio of work behind us from medical to the industrial sector, leisure centres, swimming pools, hotels and shopping centre. We carried out a lot of work on behalf of Quinnsworth initially and Tesco subsequently.
“We’ve worked on a lot of different things and that is something you must do if you are based outside of Dublin. You have to be able to broaden your horizons. We’ve also worked closely with civil construction companies on water projects and sewerage treatment plants.”
