Kytun come up with solutions for Award winning Shankill Women’s Centre

2 Sep , 2024

The Shankill Women’s Centre in Belfast is a €6.5 million purpose-built shared space constructed by P&K McKaigue Building Contractors alongside Sperrin Facades. This project includes distinctive aluminium design elements, uniquely designed and specified by award-winning Todd Architects.

The Kytun team was tasked with designing a variety of bespoke aluminium products and the specific requirements were not your typical off-the-shelf solution and required specialised in-house design, manufacturing and onsite installation. The bespoke solutions included Aluminium Secret Fixed Ribbed Panels, Aluminium Cladding with Shadow Gap Joints, Bespoke Aluminium Cassettes and Rainwater goods.

Timelines for manufacturing and installation were also important to the client.

“This project required specialist fabrication, manufacturing and powder coating. The finished products also needed a specialist installer. For these reasons, Kytun was identified as a key supplier. Their attention to detail was key to the project’s success,” said Damian Maguire, Commercial Manager at Sperrin Facades Ltd.

The Kytun design department employed a variety of drawings and design methodologies, which enabled
the vision to take shape and the product manufacturing process to commence. The team worked to develop a tailored manufacturing and installation process. This approach ensured the contractor could
meet their timeline requirements as the project progressed, with Kytun handling both manufacturing and installation.

To achieve the Secret Fixed Ribbed Panel and Cassette effect, special attention was given to fabrication and the use of specific RAL colours, including RAL 1011. The panels featured bespoke aluminium profiles with colour-coded pressure plates and caps, creating a ribbed effect with custom aluminium cassettes. All items were subjected to a rigorous 4-stage pre-treatment process before powder coating to specified RAL colours, to match those already on site.

This project outlined the capabilities of the complete Kytun team working on a staged process from start to finish, ensuring the vision of the architect and the timelines of the contractor. This approach ensured the contractor could meet their timeline requirements as the project progressed, with Kytun handling both manufacturing and installation.

All fabricated panels, bespoke fascia & soffits and rainwater goods are supplied with a 20-year colour and 30-year material durability warranty, providing long-term peace of mind.
