MCC – Synonymous with quality construction

12 Apr , 2023

MCC (McCormack Construction) Ltd is a well-known building contracting firm based in Ahascragh, Co. Galway. While the company was only set up in 2018, its owner Adrian McCormack has 40 years’ experience in the construction industry.

Specialising in new one-off builds, renovations, extensions and groundworks, the family-run business has earned a reputation for quality and excellence. Adrian is joined by his son Philip and nine staff, while many more are employed on a subcontract basis. Serving Galway, Roscommon, Westmeath and beyond, the fully-insured company provides unrivalled customer service, quick turnaround times and turnkey services.

Outstanding workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of MCC. Health & Safety is at the core of the business, and never more so than in the aftermath of Covid-19. From concept to completion, Adrian and his team are with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.

Whether your next project is a new build, extension or renovation, MCC’s one-stop shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The east Galway contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from designers and scores of satisfied clients.

“While we specialise mostly in refurbishments, we also complete a number of new private house builds, extensions and works under the Disabled Persons Adaption Scheme every year,” Adrian says.

“By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with our architects and designers, and using only the very best building products, we’re able to deliver the highest quality construction to our clients.

“We’re very competitive when pricing jobs and are fortunate to have a top-class team of carpenters, plumbers, electricians, plasterers, block-layers and groundworkers. Our main suppliers are Greene’s Topline Hardware in Ahascragh and Chadwicks in Ballinasloe. The designers and engineers we deal with on a regular basis include Liam Loughrey and Gerry Cleary in Ballinasloe, and James Lohan in Roscommon.”

MCC is currently collaborating with Liam Loughrey on the Ahascragh Distillery which is owned by Gareth and Michelle McAllister and will be a state-of-the-art whiskey distillery and visitor experience in the West of Ireland.

“We’re proud to be the main contractors on a local and prestigious project such as this. We’ve carried out renovation and stone repair works to the existing building and are now adding on a 3,000 sq. ft. extension,” Adrian explains.

The €10 million transformation of the old Ahascragh Mills into a world-class whiskey distillery and visitor experience is moving forward at pace. The old corn mill, which dates back to the early 1800s and up until the 1950s processed grain into floor, was acquired in 2019. Planning permission was secured in October 2020, with structural and enabling works completed in June 2021. The distillery is on target to commence production in early 2023 with an initial target of 500,000 litres of whiskey and gin per year. It will have a production capacity of 700,000 litres.

The eco-distillery will be powered by renewable energy using new innovative technology. The owners have a passion and drive to produce some of the first carbon-neutral whiskey and gin in Ireland. Through tours, tastings and workshops, the visitor centre will offer an intimate and unique experience. The original water wheel will be reinstated and a permanent exhibition of the salvaged mill equipment will celebrate the history of the buildings, while also exploring Irish whiskey-making and the future of Ahascragh spirit. There will be something for everyone.

Located in the heart of Ahascragh village, the Old Mill Shop and Café is a key part of the Ahascragh Distillery story. Now open, the establishment invites locals and visitors to enjoy good food and good company. The shop and café’s bespoke pieces of furniture, using salvaged equipment from the mill, take pride of place.

MCC was also involved in the restoration of Clonbrock Castle a few years ago. Located on the outskirts of Ahascragh, the 15th century tower house was once a stronghold of the O’Kelly family.

“We worked on Clonbrock Castle for three or four years. Other notable projects we’ve recently completed include a full refurbishment of Gullane’s Hotel in Ballinasloe and an extension to Kilglass National School in Ahascragh.”

Asked how MCC is faring in the face of soaring building material costs, Adrian replies: “It’s become the norm and we just have to get on with it. At this stage, I think everyone has acclimatised to the rising costs. Insulation is especially expensive at a time when there is a big emphasis on BER energy ratings. Steel is coming back a bit, but it still has a long way to go to get to where it used to be.”

As his company continues to go from strength to strength, Adrian would like to take this opportunity to thank his clients, suppliers and designers for their support as well as his staff and sub-contractors for their hard work, dedication and expertise.
