McNulty Construction celebrates 25 years

8 Sep , 2025

Celebrating 25 years in business, McNulty Construction in Stranorlar, Co. Donegal has earned an enviable reputation for quality construction at affordable prices.

Providing a wide range of building services to the residential and commercial sectors, McNulty Construction was founded in 2000 by local man Pat McNulty, who hails from a family steeped in the trade. Pat’s background in engineering has come in particularly useful as his company continues to go from strength to strength.

“I was the fourth eldest in a family of five boys and four girls. All of the lads are involved in construction like our late father Noel was before us. He had his own construction company but sadly passed away in 1990 when I was only 14,” Pat explains.

“After leaving school, I did an engineering degree in Bolton Street and worked with EEL (Environmental Engineering Ltd) in Tallaght after graduating. I then spent a year in Australia before returning home to set up my own company. Apart from an eight-month period during the recession when I worked with my brother Frankie – who started out as a woodwork teacher and taught me a lot about the business – in Dublin, all of my work is carried out close to home.”

He adds: “My background in mechanical and electrical engineering has stood me in good stead, especially with regard to the whole area of energy efficiency.

“I have done a number of courses in passive house design, including one in Germany in 2015. Houses are like an engine in that they have to perform for you.”

While new one-off residential builds, renovations and extensions are Pat’s ‘bread and butter’, he has also successfully delivered many commercial projects.

“We’re currently collaborating with McCabe Architects on Marley Funeral Directors’ new funeral home in Ballybofey which will serve the Finn Valley area. They also have a funeral home in Letterkenny,” he says.

“We’ve done a lot of work for Butler’s Marina in Carrick-on-Shannon as well, including piling and design & build of their concrete slipway. We continue to work for this client and have also built a number of creches in our locality.”

Using traditional construction methods, McNulty Construction builds beautiful, high-performing, energy efficient homes, extensions and renovations across the north-west. The contractor builds 10 new one-off homes a year on average, which are typically 2,500 sq. ft. in size.

“Our passion is for one-offs, so that’s what we mainly concentrate on. We can look after every aspect of the build, from foundations to turnkey if the client so wishes. We’re a one-stop shop for all your house building needs,” Pat points out.

Outstanding workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of McNulty Construction. Health & Safety is also paramount. From concept to completion, Pat and his exceptional team are with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.

McNulty Construction’s one-stop shop approach ensures that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from scores of satisfied clients.

By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with design teams and using only the very best building products, this fully insured contractor is able to deliver the highest quality construction to its clients.

“We employ eight people directly and many more on a subcontract basis. I only employ the best tradesmen, so not only will your new project be structurally sound and cost-effective to heat, it will also be beautifully and professionally finished. All work is carried out and completed to the highest standards.”

Pat enjoys an excellent working relationship with his subcontractors, suppliers and design teams. Committed to supporting local businesses, his main suppliers are WH Raitt in Stranorlar, Roadstone and Bonar’s Quarry, while the architects / engineers he deals with on a regular basis are Charlie Byrne of White Fox Engineering, Barry McCullagh of McCullagh Architecture & Surveying, Carr & Company Architects and the aforementioned McCabe Architects.

Pat’s three sons, Fionn, Tomás and Patrick, are working with him for the summer and he’s confident they will follow in his footsteps when they complete their education. He is also grateful for the support he receives from his wife Charmian and daughters Courtney and Holly.

In conclusion, the affable Donegal man says: “We’re always there for the customer and mindful that you’re only ever as good as your last job. We enjoy the variety of the work and don’t pigeon-hole ourselves. I’m very lucky to have good people around me who work well as a team, and are reliable and flexible. They are just as adept with a digger as they are with a screwdriver. We’d be nothing without them.”

As McNulty Construction celebrates a major milestone, Pat would like to take this opportunity to thank his clients, suppliers and design teams for their continued support as well as his hard-working team and subcontractors for their dedication, loyalty and expertise.

Here’s to the next 25 years and many more!
