Shortlisted for the Irish Construction Industry Sub-Contractor of the Year Award for the second year running, O’Neill Mechanical & Electrical Services is a leading M&E contractor based in Dromore, Co. Tyrone. Commercial manager John Reynolds explains more.
The family-run business was established in 1985 by Kevin O’Neill and has grown to employ almost 80 staff comprising contract managers, engineers, electricians, site operatives as well as Health & Safety, Human Resources, administration and accounts personnel. Kevin continues to be a director in the company along with his son Shane.
In August 2016, John Reynolds joined the firm as commercial manager and was responsible for setting up the mechanical division, which has led to a doubling in staff numbers. It also led to the company changing its name from O’Neill Electrics Ltd to O’Neill Mechanical & Electrical Services last December. The company now describes itself as “a multi-discipline specialist in the provision of mechanical and electrical building services to the private and public sectors”.
John explains: “About 18 months ago, Kevin & Shane made a conscious decision to expand the company’s portfolio to both mechanical & electrical services & we started offering our clients the full M&E package. It has made a huge difference to our business. Our turnover has increased dramatically and our staff has doubled in size.
“We have evolved to offer a range of services, including electrical, mechanical, maintenance and facilities management. We have embraced BIM (Building Information Modelling) in a big way to deliver efficiencies for our clients.”
O’Neill Mechanical & Electrical Services carries out projects on both sides of the border and also has an office in South Derbyshire which caters for its growing UK customer-base.
“Our Irish and UK offices give clients and customers the peace of mind they will receive prompt attention and service. We have a strong presence in the South (of Ireland), which accounts for about 70 per cent of our overall business. We work alongside some of the biggest main contractors in Ireland and have a great team working for us,” the affable Ballyshannon man says.
The contractor has and continues to set the highest standards in efficiency, quality and Health & Safety, which is reflected in its ISO accreditations for same. This keeps with the company’s directive of quality without compromise.
“We strive to meet every requirement necessary in terms of Health & Safety, environmental and quality through the implementation and certification of our Integrated Management System incorporating our ISO 18001 (Health & Safety), ISO 14001 (environmental) and ISO 9001 (quality) systems. We are registered electrical contractors with both NICEIC (Northern Ireland and the UK) and RECI (Republic of Ireland).
“All employees are trained in all relevant Health & Safety requirements. The environmental aspect ensures that management is committed to continuous improvements in environmental performance and the prevention of pollution.”
Clients can be assured of project delivery on time and within budget, with the directors involved daily in the operation of completion of same. The company covers all aspects of mechanical, electrical and maintenance services (both planned and reactive) within the construction industry, from bespoke residential projects to large commercial / industrial developments. The maintenance service is provided to a wide range of clients, including housing associations, local authorities, schools, colleges, hospitals, hotels and commercial premises.
