Mercury the obvious M&E choice for courts bundle

25 Apr , 2017

Mercury Engineering is providing full mechanical and electrical services to the currently-ongoing Courts Bundle PPP Project in seven towns nationwide – another notable landmark for this successful, innovative company which celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2017.

The Courts Bundle PPP Project – due for completion in November, 2017 – comprises the development of new courthouse buildings in Drogheda, Letterkenny, Limerick and Wexford in addition to refurbishment and extension works to existing courthouses in Cork, Mullingar and Waterford.  These priority projects, as identified by the Courts Service, will help to deliver improvements leading to reduced waiting times and reduced costs of litigation.

The improvements in court buildings in city and county town locations around the country will also allow the rationalisation of court sittings and help to achieve efficiencies in delivering services through the use of improved facilities and technology.

In December, 2015, the National Development Finance Agency (NDFA) announced the start of construction on this major €135m project to deliver new / refurbished courthouse facilities in seven different locations around Ireland.

On June 15th, BAM PPP PGGM Infrastructure Cooperative U.A, a joint venture between Royal BAM Group and Dutch pension fund administrator PGGM, had been awarded the contract to design and build the courts and maintain them over the 25-year service period.

Commenting on the Courts Bundle PPP project at the time, Theo Cullinane, CEO BAM Ireland said “We are pleased to have concluded this agreement in relation to the €135 million Court Bundle PPP project. This will support in excess of 2,500 direct and supporting jobs across the country. Our courts are key elements of State infrastructure, and it is a source of tremendous pride for BAM that we will be undertaking the construction, modernisation, and long-term maintenance of these important buildings.”

The modernisation of Ireland’s justice facilities is a key element of the Irish Government’s €2.25 billion Infrastructure Stimulus Programme. The seven courthouses concerned, ranging in size from 1,354 m² to 8,490 m² in gross floor area, are as follows:

Cork city: the refurbishment and extension of the existing landmark courthouse building at Anglesea Street to accommodate six courtrooms, improved custody facilities, court offices, the regional office and associated facilities.

Drogheda, County Louth: a new courthouse consisting of two courtrooms and associated facilities on a landmark town centre site adjacent to the River Boyne.

Letterkenny, County Donegal: a new courthouse to accommodate four courtrooms and associated facilitieson a town centre site close to the existing courthouse.

Limerick city: a new criminal courthouse on a site adjacent to Limerick Prison, to include six courtrooms, custody facilities, court offices and associated facilities.

Mullingar, County Westmeath: the refurbishment and extension of the existing historic courthouse in Mullingar to accommodate three courtrooms, improved custody facilities, court offices and associated facilities.

Waterford city: the refurbishment and extension of the existing historic courthouse in Waterford to accommodate six courtrooms, improved custody facilities, court offices and associated facilities.
