Based in Newtownmountkennedy, Co Wicklow, MJS Civil Engineering Ltd specialises in high-quality, bespoke projects for its clients. Building Ireland touched base with its Managing Director Michael Storan to hear all about the company which was been shortlisted at the prestigious Irish Construction Excellence (ICE) Awards this year.
This year marks almost 40 years since Michael first ventured into Civil engineering contracting and today it boasts a proven track record in coastal and flood defence, public parks, large pipeline works, storm water, sewage management, reservoir building and general civil works.
MJS Civil Engineering has carried out drainage works, water main and reservoir works, coastal defence works, coastal and flood defence works, WWTP construction and public parks-walkways all throughout the country and in the UK.
Building Ireland caught up with Michael Storan to learn more about the business and its nomination in the ‘Public Realm – Up to €2m’ category at the upcoming Irish Construction Excellence Awards.
“Our industry has been very active in the last few years and we are hopeful that the capital spend by the government remains constant, building the infrastructure to sustain future growth in the economy,” outlined the Managing Director.
This past October saw the company delivering the Emigrant Park project in New Ross, Co Wexford for Wexford County Council which followed the successful completion of the High Hill – Norman Park in the town which was constructed within the restrictive Covid era.
The project, which commenced in March 2023 and was valued at €1m, saw Wexford County Council commission the demolition and redevelopment of the fuel depot in the town of New Ross.
The depot itself consisted of five bulk fuel storage tanks and control building on a bunded site in the town. It was developed into a high-quality public realm befitting the site’s central location in the town and proximity to the existing Dunbrody Visitor Centre, Plaza and Marina Walk.
MJS Civil Engineering constructed the public realm park to the highest quality on time and within budget showing in every aspect of the construction true excellence in construction techniques and execution powered by a wealth of knowledge and experience built up over 40 years involved in the industry.
The company’s first-rate work on the Emigrant Park project has since been recognised on a national scale after it was shortlisted as a finalist at the prestigious ICE Awards in its ‘Public Realm – Up to €2m’ category.
“We were delighted to be nominated for the work we carried out at Emigrant Park in New Ross. It’s always great to get a bit of recognition amongst your peers for these things,” Michael said on the nomination.
Working for clients such as Wicklow, Wexford, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal, Meath, Cork and Limerick County Councils as well as Shannon Airport Authority, Irish Water, to name but a few, has seen MJS amass an excellent reputation for delivering high-quality work.
Michael Storan himself has worked in Civil Engineering for close to four decades now, having qualified from UCG in 1983, and spent time working in the UK where he first set up his contracting venture.
So, the burning question is, what has been the secret behind the success of this company to date?
How has small civil engineering start up grown into what is now a thriving business with a golden reputation amongst its clients?
For the Managing Director, he sees it as coming down to a combination of different factors.
“We concentrate on getting the basics right and thereby providing a quality product delivered on time and in a safe environment. We pride ourselves in a satisfied client who has got value for money in the finished works.
“They would range from flood defence to work on the South East Greenway to the completed project at a High Hill Norman Garden Park, which was a huge success and very well received by the general public.
“So, all those factors help to build up a relationship with the client and the trust that we will provide and perform to the highest standards and that they will end up with the product that they desire.”
Looking at the months ahead for ‘MJS’, its founder is keen for things to carry on in the same manner as the company continues to offer the very highest standards of work for its clients.
“We’re happy to just continue to provide good value for money and high-quality work.
“It satisfies our objectives to be seen as a trusted operator in the locality in the Wexford and Waterford regions. We’re not chasing turnover and we’re just happy to stay as we are and to provide a quality product for good clients,” Michael concluded.
Fantastic to hear.
