MMT Builder & Son Ltd is the new name for MMT Builders Ltd, the well-established Fethard, Co. Tipperary-based building firm which specialises in one-off house building, listed building restoration, social housing and Government projects.
Coming up on 20 years in business – it was founded in 2004 – MMT Builder & Son Ltd has earned an outstanding reputation for quality and excellence, and continues to go from strength to strength under the guidance of Matthew ‘Mark’ Tynan. A fourth-generation carpenter, Mark recently tweaked the company’s name to reflect the involvement of his 17-year-old son Adam, who is serving his time with the family business.
“Adam will be the fifth-generation carpenter in the family when he’s qualified,” Mark proudly declares.
“He’s showing a great interest, and I thought it would be nice to recognise him in the company name. Other than that, nothing has changed. We’re all about the customer and giving them the best possible service.”
Mark worked in carpentry, steel fixing and shuttering in England, Holland, France, Germany and Belgium for 12 years before returning home to Tipperary to set up his own construction company.
“My father Mattie, grandfather who was also Mattie, and great-grandfather, Watt Tynan, were all carpenters before me,” he explains.
“It’s in the blood. Even my daughter, Amy, got a Distinction in Carpentry in her Leaving Cert. She is now working as a lab technician in Pinewood Healthcare in Ballymacarbry, Co. Waterford, having received an Honours Degree in Biopharmaceutical Chemistry from NUI Galway and a Bachelor of Science in Applied Biology and Biopharmaceutical Science.
“My oldest son Darren is married with three kids in Australia. He’s working in the mining industry and is settled over there at this stage,” adds the affable carpenter, who receives great support from his wife Elizabeth.
Mark admits his business was slow to take off and might not have survived the economic crash of over a decade ago had he not struck up an excellent working relationship with Tipperary County Council which endures to this day.
“I’ve been working for Tipperary County Council since 2005 when I saw an ad in the paper looking for someone to refurbish a social house in Fethard. I replied to it and the rest, as they say, is history,” he says.
“The recession hit a couple of years later and you were glad of any work you got. I did wall and floor tiling and lots of other odd jobs to stay in business. I’ll always be grateful to Tipperary County Council because they awarded me two social housing projects at the height of the recession. The first was a 12-house development worth €1.6 million in my home village of Moyglass, which is three miles from Fethard, and the second was a 20-house development in Fethard worth €2.75 million two years later in 2011.”
Superior workmanship, attention to detail, value-for-money and a commitment to working closely with clients to deliver total satisfaction are the hallmarks of MMT Builder & Son Ltd. Health & Safety is at the core of the business, and never more so than since the Covid-19 pandemic. From concept to completion, Mark and his team are with you every step of the way, ensuring that your new project is designed and built to your specific needs, and that there are no hidden or extra costs involved.
Whether your next project is a new build, extension, refurbishment or restoration, MMT Builder & Son Ltd’s one-stop shop approach will ensure that both the design and building processes are smooth, comfortable and hassle-free. The Tipperary contractor’s reputation for quality construction and ability to complete projects on time and within the agreed budget is borne out by the high volume of repeat business and referrals it receives from satisfied clients.
“Reputation is everything in this game. If you have a good reputation, the work will come your way. All of our work is secured through word of mouth and recommendations from architects. And we get a lot of repeat business which is always a good sign.”
“We subcontract out everything and have about 30 subbies on our books at any one time. We do, however, have our own plant which includes four teleporters, four diggers, three- and six-tonne dumpers, a lorry, a tractor, a 30ft loader, two vans and scaffolding. By employing highly-skilled people, working closely with leading architects and engineers, and using only the very best building products, we’re able to deliver the highest quality construction to our customers.”
Fully certified and insured, MMT Builder & Son Ltd provides a range of construction services to the private and public sectors. The contractor has completed numerous one-off new house builds, ranging from 900 sq. ft. to 5,500 sq. ft. in size. The largest one-off house Mark has built to date was a 5,500 sq. ft. eight-bedroom luxury dwelling near Thurles.
MMT Builder & Son Ltd has also completed classroom extensions to New Ross CBS, Thurles CBS, Presentation Thurles and Strangsmill Primary School in Kilmacow, Co. Kilkenny on behalf of the Department of Education. In addition, the family business has completed many housing adaptation projects for older people or people with a disability which are funded by LEADER programme grants and carries out maintenance work on an ongoing basis for Tipperary County Council.
Mark has worked with Clonmel-based Grade A conservation architect Margaret Quinlan on several listing building restoration projects, including Borris House in Carlow and DW Parke chemist in Clonmel.
Current / recent projects include a €2.2 million extension to St John the Baptist BNS in Cashel; refurbishment of existing four units at Ballyknock Hauling Site in Cashel on behalf of Tipperary County Council; conversion of a barn into a two-bed apartment at Brownstown House & Stud in The Curragh, Co. A generous supporter of local organisations and charities, Mark would like to take this opportunity to thank his clients, suppliers, sub-contractors and design teams for their continued support.
