12 Jan , 2018

MRA Electrical (MRA Electrical & Security Ltd) is a leading registered electrical contractor based in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. Employing a team of 38 full-time employees, the company caters for the domestic, commercial and industrial markets.

Established in October 2011, MRA Electrical has grown to become one of the South-East’s most successful and respected electrical contracting firms. The company prides itself on providing quality work, delivered on time, within budget and to specification. Registered and insured, MRA Electrical is a member of Safe Electric, RECI (Register of Electrical Contractors of Ireland) and ETGI (Electro Techno Guidance of Ireland).

With a skilled and versatile team of professionals, the Enniscorthy contractor offers a wealth of industry experience and expertise, is equipped to take on contracts of all sizes, and boasts an impressive portfolio of work. MRA Electrical works closely with its clients to understand their needs and can tailor its methods and service to suit their requirements. It strives to promote best practice in Health & Safety at all times, while staff members engage in constant upskilling to keep abreast of all the latest developments within the industry.

MRA was founded by husband-and-wife Michael and Nadia Donohoe, and is an acronym for Michael and his two oldest sons, Ryan (10) and Alex (six). The couple are also proud parents to Siena (four) and Evan (two). Michael, who has worked in the industry since 1999 when he was apprenticed to renowned electrical provider Mark O’Gorman, was joined by his father Johnny, brother Paddy, Alan O’Connor and cousin Michael Kehoe in the new venture. Two more cousins, Michael and Gary Dempsey, have since joined the MRA team. An experienced business professional, Nadia manages the administration and customer services departments. She ensures that the customer is looked after from the initial enquiry through to the completion of the job.

“We provide a professional, reliable, skilled and value-for-money service. We’re committed to maintaining quality and Health & Safety standards on every job we undertake,” says Michael.

“While most of our work is concentrated in the South-East, we have carried out projects all over the country. We’ll go wherever the work takes us. If there’s something we can’t do ourselves, we’ll get some other reputable contractor to do it for us. As well as our clients, we work closely with engineering consultants, architects and main contractors to ensure that every job is completed successfully.

“No job is too big or too small.”

The firm works in all areas of the electrical industry and has completed a diverse range of projects in both the private and public sectors. It is currently working alongside another well-known Co. Wexford company, Mythen Construction, for the Department of Education on the €11 million redevelopment (extensions and alterations) to Wexford CBS (post-primary school) and Colaiste Eamon Ris (primary), and the new St. Martin’s Special School in Waterford. The new 4,100 sq. m. build consists of a single-storey special school and will consist of classrooms, associated teaching spaces, ancillary accommodation, general purpose room, play court, external soft play areas, car parking, external works and new boundary. The electrical works are expected to be completed in September.

MRA Electrical also recently teamed up with Mythen Construction to carry out the full electrical installation package for the 206-unit Millennium Park private housing development in Naas, Co. Kildare. The units are a mixture of apartments, town houses, terrace houses and three, four and five-bed detached houses. Other electrical projects MRA Electrical has successfully completed include the complete rewiring of Borris House in Co. Carlow for owner Morgan Kavanagh and Wilson’s Hospital School in Multyfarnham, Co. Westmeath for the Department of Education / Jerry Geaney Engineering Consultants. The MRA team completed a sympathetic restoration of the electrical work of Borris House, ensuring safety, comfort and peace of mind for the owners. A large project that required a quick turnaround, 17 MRA electricians spent the month of August 2016 in Wilson’s Hospital to have it ready in time for the start of the school year.

“That was one of our most challenging projects. We based ourselves in Mullingar for the month and worked seven days a week to complete the project on time and to specification for the client,” the affable managing director recalls.

MRA Electrical was also the electrical contractor on the refurbishment / upgrade of the St. John of God Primary School in Wexford town and The Athenaeum in Enniscorthy for main contractors Byrne & Byrne Construction. The St. John of God project involved upgrading the entire electrical and mechanical throughout along with upgrading the energy efficiency of the building. The school now boasts 16 new bright modern classrooms with the latest in digital white boards as well as a state-of-the-art café / canteen to cater for a large number of students.

Dating from the 1890s, The Athenaeum was the headquarters of the Enniscorthy Volunteers during the 1916 Easter Rising and is a truly unique building which symbolises the rich history of the Slaneyside town from drama circles, musicals and the historical events that took place there. It was restored last year to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising. In addition, MRA has completed full electrical installations for Byrne & Byrne Developments on a social housing scheme in Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow and for the Department of Education on Kilrane National School’s new Autism unit. The main contractor on this contract was JJ Sinnott Construction.

Aged 35, Michael Donohoe is well-known in local GAA circles. He had the honour of captaining the Wexford footballers from U14 up to U21 level and also won two senior county championship medals in 2002 and 2004 with Starlights, whose grounds are just a kick of a ball away from MRA’s office in Bellefield.
