While PJ Treacy & Sons Ltd undertakes projects all over Ireland, its secures much of its work locally. It was the main contractor on the new pavilion at the South West Regional College’s CREST Centre in Enniskillen, which was completed in late 2014 and has set new standards in sustainable construction. This building bears the distinction of being Ireland’s largest green technology R&D and training facility.
The £1.75 million Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technologies (CREST) provides specialist education, training and R&D support to help small and medium-sized firms compete in the multi-billion pound renewable energy and sustainable technologies sectors. It is staffed by a multi-disciplined team of sustainability and innovation professionals.
The pavilion’s design and construction focused on meeting three key sustainable credentials – PassivHaus Certification; BREEAM excellent; and Zero Carbon.
“This was the first time these three criteria were combined in one project,” PJ Treacy & Sons contracts manager Sean McCarron explains.
“We have a strong record in constructing traditional steel and concrete framed structures. However, building a Glulam timber structure incorporating SIP panels was a new challenge for us. But we have a highly-skilled team, so making this adjustment was straightforward, while meeting the additional demands of the three sustainable criteria was also an area that didn’t offer any new challenges.
“We already put a lot of effort into how we plan each project, so that attention to detail was again put in place to ensure we met the requirement of each standard.”
As a local building firm, PJ Treacy & Sons was especially proud to be associated with this project.
“We were delighted to have been involved with such a prestigious contract on our own doorstep. But just as importantly, the CREST will be used to show what can be achieved by using sustainable construction techniques. We relished the challenge of building upon our previous experience and expertise to accomplish what is now recognised as a new standard in building construction excellence,” adds Sean.
PJ Treacy & Sons has also recently completed builds at the North West Regional College sites in Derry and Strabane. The North West Regional College is a leading provider of further and higher education and skills training with over 20,000 students enrolled. In 2014, P J Treacy completed a 5.6m cross-border project in Pettigo, Co Donegal, consisting of a community building, sports centre, play school, street and river scape works.
Current projects being undertaken by the company include the refurbishment of the Holy Cross Church in Lisnaskea, a large extension at the Kerry Foods manufacturing plant in Enniskillen, a 31-house residential development at College Park Lane, Tempo Road, Enniskillen, the final phase of another residential development at Bressy View, Belleek and a new Social Housing site for Apex Housing at Brookeborough, Co Fermanagh.
