21 Aug , 2017

Martin O’Neill Electrical/Data is a Galway based electrical and data company providing a full range of electrical and data services to both commercial and residential customers. Building Ireland caught up with the man himself to learn more about a business which has grown itself an excellent reputation.

Since setting up in 1996, Martin O’Neill Electrical/Data has operated a team of experienced electricians to ensure that each job is carried out professionally and efficiently.

It is the company’s priority to ensure that their customer’s premises is up and running as quickly as possible, which goes a long way to explaining why Martin O’Neill Electrical/Data celebrated its 20th anniversary last August.

As a registered electrical contractor working in both Galway and Dublin, the team provide an electrical service  to various Hotels, Restaurants, Public Houses, Hostels, retail outlets, office buildings, factories and commercial premises. The company also carries out work for Galway city’s council, hospitals and universities.

The company marked 20 years of business with the recent addition of their Dublin office. This expansion means that Martin O’Neill Electrical/Data can now offer its expertise in Structured Data & Fibre Optic Cabling to businesses across the capital and east of the country.

At the moment, Martin O’Neill Electrical/Data employ 15 staff in total, which includes 13 electricians and two office staff. The team have all been working with the company for a number of years, while Martin’s wife Margaret is part of the office staff and his son Danny is also working with the company at present.

Martin himself took time out of his busy schedule to tell us all about the business which he started from scratch.

“I formed this business as a sole trader in 1996. In 2005, we became a limited company and moved into the premises that we’re in now in Liosban Industrial Estate on the Tuam Road,” he stated.

“We started off by doing service work for hotels and then got into working with the HSE and Facilities Management companies. The change into IT and data came then in 2005 and what we’re doing now would be 50 per cent data and 50 per cent electrical.”

As for his own background, Martin spent some time abroad whilst learning is trade.

Stints in London and Boston, where he spent half a decade working in Fenway Park – home of the famous Red Sox baseball franchise – did him the world of good before returning home and eventually dedicating himself to his own start up in Galway.

“I would have started my apprenticeship as an electrician around 1979-1980. I worked for James P Cunningham as an apprentice, and qualified in 1983.” he stated.

“After I qualified, I moved to London, where I worked for several months as an electrician. I came back to Ireland in 1984 and subsequently made the decision to move to Boston. I worked there for seven years and learned a lot during my time there. I worked in the baseball stadium for five of the seven years I was there. I came back from Boston in 1991 and started doing work for many of Galway’s hotels.”

Another ‘claim to fame’ for Martin saw his then three-year-old company working in the same Galway hotel (the 5 star Glenlo Abbey) that former US Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton stayed in during her visit to Ireland back in 1999 as America’s First Lady.

Martin O’Neill Electrical were tasked with setting up the phone line in the hotel so Mrs Clinton could have a secure and direct line to the White House.

Now, some 18 years later, Glenlo Abbey is still a customer, business is still going strong and Martin describes the HSE as being their “biggest client”.

“Business is good. It seems to be gathering a bit of momentum all the time and we’re looking forward to the next couple of years.”

“Galway is very busy for us now and Dublin has yet to really click, but we’re making inroads so hopefully it will build in the next few years. We do a lot of work with the HSE in UHG and Merlin Park hospitals, as well as working regularly in NUIG, GMIT, Medtronic and the Galway Bay Hotel.”

Their team of experienced, qualified electricians carry out work in Galway, Dublin, Mayo, Clare, Limerick and Sligo, while their IT specialists are carrying out structured data and fibre optic  cabling on a nationwide scale.

The company are receiving a lot of enquiries from companies of late into inspection and certification of Emergency Lighting and Fire alarm installation & commissioning. Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) and Festive Lighting are also part of the company’s repertoire as well.

On the data end, the company offer tailored structured data cabling solutions specifically developed to meet the needs of your organisation and it’s devices to ensure  a constant smooth flow of data at all times across telephone, computer data and building management systems.

Design, installation, testing, repairs and maintenance  services of Fibre Optic systems are also provided by the company’s IT specialists.

It’s little wonder why Martin O’Neill Electrical/Data has been growing stronger and stronger with each of its 21 years.

Martin puts their continued success down to one thing in particular, which he has offered his clients from the beginning.

“It’s very simple; it’s service, service, service,” he said. “We provide a 24-hour emergency call out service for our clients and we feel we provide the most professional electrical service – in regards to the actual service – in Galway. Our team have a dress code, so never look out of place wherever they’re working. They leave a premises as they found it, and our commercial customers in particular appreciate that service.”
