Plant hire is a skilled trade that takes huge investment to get up and running. For those who do succeed, a lot of hard work and dedication is needed.
In this month’s edition of Building Ireland, we profile Paul Callinan Plant Hire Ltd which is a Limerick based company that was established in 1995.
Owned and operated by Paul Callinan, the company has established itself as a leader in plant hire machinery and contracting to the construction and civil engineering industry.
Paul had to sacrifice a lot but knew that with determination, hard work and knowledge within the industry, he could achieve it all and that they would be able to supply his customers future needs.
With many years’ experience in the plant hire business, the company has built up a reputation for excellent plant hire service and professionalism. Operating the most modern plant hire equipment, Paul Callinan Plant Hire Ltd continues to satisfy the needs of its many plant hire clients throughout Ireland.
“We mainly work for the construction industry,” Paul explained. “From doing all the ground works and site development for main contractors on a particular construction site to just offering certain services to a client such as excavation and disposal of site materials to our waste facilities, demolition, crushing, pipe laying, road works, car parks or hiring in plant and operators to the client,” said Paul.
The company’s staff, which include Plant Operators, Truck Drivers, Mechanics, Site Personnel and Administrative support have gained many years of experience in the plant hire and civil contracting business, and have gained the trust of its customers which is evident from the repeat business and long term customer base.
They are operating all their own equipment with diggers from 13 ton to 20 ton, Dumptrucks, Dozers and tipper trucks.
“We would also upgrade the fleet of machinery on a regular basis, usually every three years and there is a mixture of new and used machinery brought in. We would deal with MacHales generally and find them very good. If ever there is a problem, there are always happy to help.”
With the construction sector now in recovery from a stinging recession which rocked the industry throughout the country, Paul admits that it is good to see a steadier construction industry ahead.
“We are busy enough at the moment. We have a core of clients that we do most of our work for and as long as they are happy with the service that we provide then we are happy too.
“We work closely with our customers to ensure everything runs smoothly from beginning to end of hire with our professional and reliable service. Our customers always come back for our reliable service at competitive rates for that guaranteed excellent service. We know going the extra mile, we would be able to provide that more personal service to ensure our customers satisfaction to meeting all their needs.”
The company has not been afraid to move with the times and if the work is there, they have no problem meeting the demand by taking on more staff if necessary.
“We would take on people accordingly. There are 20 here at the moment and some of them would be with us many years. I’m delighted with the workforce that I have as they are all very experienced at what they do and that makes a huge difference at the end of the day.”
As a company they are concerned about the ever-changing health & safety requirements on sites. That’s why they keep fully updated on any relevant changes. Regular meetings can now be held with the health & safety officers of the majority of their customers as well as site managers to ensure they meet specific requirements. All parties are concerned about remaining within the regulations and, through these meetings; they are able to satisfy any concerns.
One of the most recent projects that the company has been involved in is for John Sisk & Son where they were involved in the groundworks on the redevelopment project at The Curragh racecourse.
“A lot of customers would be with us for many years going back to when the business was first established. Everyone is treated the same here and once we are employed to do a project, the customer knows that it will be done to the best of our abilities, which always meets their requirements. Once we can continue to do that then, we should have no problems for the future.”
Speaking of the future, Paul concluded that the next generation of the family was showing a keen interest in the business.
“My daughter Leanne and son Padraig are the next generation coming through and hopefully they will bring the company forward when the time is right.”
