Based in Fermoy, Co Cork, Mick Robinson Building Contractors is a trusted and respected local building contractor with an excellent reputation for delivering quality projects. Building Ireland caught up with the man himself to hear more on the company – from its origins to the projects its currently working on.

When Mick Robinson started up his construction venture close on 20 years ago, he did so with the ambition of one day running a business which would be renowned for both its professionalism and quality.

Today, Mick Robinson Building Contractors stands as a tried and trusted business which has delivered projects all throughout the Cork region and over the Rebel County’s borders.

Indeed, the company has steadily built a reputation as one of the region’s most trusted and respected construction firms, and is known for delivering high-quality projects across residential and commercial sectors, the company has become synonymous with craftsmanship, reliability and attention to detail.

When Building Ireland touched base with Managing Director Mick Robinson, it was clear that the company’s success is grounded in experience, resilience and an unwavering commitment to quality.

“We’re based in 61 St Bernard’s Place, Fermoy, Co Cork. The company is established since 2007 and there are five full-time staff working with the company,” he outlined.

While the company officially launched in 2007, Mick’s experience in the construction industry stretches back much further.

“I’m sub-contracting since 1996, so I just turned to building houses then,” he said. “It was late 2006/07 that I started building, so it was starting to get tough soon after but we managed to get through it.”

Launching a building company on the cusp of Ireland’s economic downturn was no small challenge.

Yet surviving – and ultimately thriving – during that period is something Mick credits to one defining principle: quality.

“We’re producing high quality projects. All of our finishes are high quality,” he stated. “We’re focused on quality as much as anything else here and that’s what kept us going during the recession. It’s something that we put a big emphasis on.”

That emphasis on standards continues to define the company today.

Mick Robinson Building Contractors has carved out a strong niche in the construction of one-off homes, offering clients a comprehensive turnkey service from start to finish.

“We do a lot of one-off houses, turnkey finish,” Mick said. “We’ve been doing a lot of retrofits for the last couple of years, deep retrofits.”

The turnkey model has proven particularly attractive to homeowners seeking a streamlined building experience. From groundwork to final finishes, clients benefit from a single, accountable contractor managing every stage of the process. This approach ensures consistency, quality control, and efficient delivery.

In recent years, deep retrofit projects have become a significant part of the company’s portfolio. As energy efficiency standards tighten and homeowners look to improve the performance of older properties, demand for comprehensive retrofit solutions has grown.

Deep retrofitting involves far more than cosmetic upgrades. It requires structural improvements, insulation enhancements, airtightness measures, window and door replacements, and often heating system upgrades. Such projects demand technical expertise and meticulous attention to detail – areas where Mick and his team excel.

By balancing new builds with retrofit work, the company has positioned itself at the forefront of evolving construction trends while maintaining the craftsmanship that underpins its reputation.

While residential construction remains a core focus, Mick Robinson Building Contractors has also developed a strong presence in the commercial sector.

“We’re doing a bit of commercial stuff as well. We’re doing a bit of work for Micro Bio in Fermoy on the chemical plant and a bit of work with Inver, which is an oil company. I’ve done their offices and done a couple of garages for them as well,” Mick noted. “We just completed a job in Riordan’s SuperValu in Fermoy as well.”

Working in active commercial environments requires careful coordination, strict adherence to safety standards and minimal disruption to operations. Whether undertaking works in industrial facilities or retail premises, the company applies the same high standards of finish and project management that define its residential builds.

The ability to move seamlessly between domestic and commercial projects highlights the versatility of Mick’s team and reinforces the trust placed in them by repeat clients.

Behind every successful construction company is a skilled workforce, and Mick is proud of the team he has built.

“There are five full-time staff working with the company. Any of the lads that are working with me there, they have all served their time and three of them are qualified with me. There are two apprentices working here at the moment,” the Corkonian explained.

This blend of experienced tradesmen and emerging talent ensures continuity, consistency, and a shared commitment to standards. Training apprentices within the company not only supports the wider industry but also helps maintain the firm’s ethos and quality benchmarks.

Having team members who trained under Mick himself creates a cohesive working culture, where expectations are clear and workmanship is closely aligned with the company’s values.

Despite wider economic fluctuations in recent years, business is currently thriving.

“Business is very good,” Mick says. “We have a deep retrofit in Fermoy there and an extension and garage. We have another project in Ballyhooly that we’re just finishing off and another job started for Micro Bio in Fermoy.”

The company maintains a manageable but steady workload.

“It’s usually two new builds and a retrofit that we’d take on a year. We just completed one before Christmas in Blackrock in Cork there as well,” said Mick.

This measured approach to growth ensures that quality never slips. Rather than overextending resources, Mick prioritises delivering each project to the highest possible standard.

It’s a strategy that has sustained the business for nearly two decades.

Looking ahead, the company is preparing to embark on a significant heritage undertaking.

“We have a large conservation project coming up in Fermoy,” Mick revealed.

Conservation work requires a specialist skill set, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern building standards. It’s an area that demands patience, precision, and respect for architectural heritage – qualities that align naturally with the company’s ethos.

In an industry where reputation is everything, Mick Robinson Building Contractors has earned its standing through consistency and integrity.

For homeowners investing in a one-off build, businesses upgrading their premises, or property owners undertaking energy-efficient retrofits, trust is paramount. Clients need confidence that timelines will be met, budgets respected, and workmanship delivered to the highest standard.

Mick believes that this focus on quality is what allowed the company to endure challenging times and emerge stronger.

Nearly two decades after its establishment, the company continues to build on that foundation. From bespoke homes and deep retrofits to commercial fit-outs and conservation projects, Mick Robinson Building Contractors remains committed to delivering projects that stand the test of time.

In Fermoy and across Cork, the name has become associated with professionalism, reliability and craftsmanship – a testament to the vision and perseverance of its Managing Director and his dedicated team.
