Phoenix Mechanical Ltd. was established by Gary and Carol Brennan in May, 2014, and has quickly established itself as an extremely efficient and competitive mechanical services contractor. The co-founder / MD boasts 30 years’ experience in the mechanical services industry in Ireland and abroad.
Liam Duffy a qualified services engineer, joined the company in June. 2015 and was joined by Jason Ryan as a director and company quantity surveyor in September, 2016. “We have an excellent site team and I have always felt that we were very strong in relation to our site activities, so strengthening the office staff was a priority,” says Gary. “Liam is very strong technically and gives us a CAD facility which is crucial we will have BIM capability this year which I feel will become more important in time.
“I have worked with Jason previously and was delighted that he accepted our invitation to come on board as a partner. He is a very safe pair of hands in relation to costings and budgets on projects and gives us the capacity to efficiently and accurately price work and value engineer projects. With Carol managing accounts and quality management, I am happy we have a great team. I have always been more comfortable overseeing the projects and having such a strong team behind me allows me the freedom to constantly monitor progress and quality on our projects”

Gary is justifiably proud of the company’s record for securing repeat business, having worked in partnership with a who’s who of main contractors including Gem Group, Ganson Building and Civil Engineering Contractors, Purcell Construction, Roankabin, Townlink Construction, Actavo and Envirogreen as well as delivering projects direct for clients.
Fully committed to Health & Safety and happy to work in tandem with external safety consultants on particular projects while ensuring that staff training certifications are both relevant and up to date, Phoenix Mechanical holds ISO 9001/2008 certification, which is a testament to the management systems that are in place at all levels throughout the company.
Some recently-delivered projects within the educational sector include a full mechanical upgrade to the existing building at Trinity College, Fenian Street; a variety of works within the DCU campus,; full mechanical package incorporating science, home economics, woodwork and classrooms at Colaiste Ghlor Na Mara; full mechanical package including new extension, new sports hall and works to existing school at Beaufort College, Navan; and full mechanical package including science rooms and classrooms at Lusk Community College.
Select healthcare projects completed include Bru Chaomihin, HSE Community Nursing, Dr Steven’s Hospital (canteen upgrade), Crumlin Hospital and Mount Tabor Nursing Home in Sandymount in addition to Aspergillus works in Tallaght and Blanchardstown Hospitals and nuclear medicine in St Vincent’s.
Meanwhile, commercial projects have been completed at AIB, Essentra Packaging, Irish Life, the Central Bank, Portmarnock Hotel and the Albany House Hotel as well as heating upgrades in Google Eastpoint and Barrow Street, while Phoenix Mechanical has also worked at various locations as part of the SEAI Warmer Homes Scheme.
Very much integrated into the local community, Phoenix Mechanical generously sponsors three local GAA sides – the Naomh Fionnbarra U13 camogie and ladies football teams and the St John Boscos school hurlers. Already, the order book for 2017 looks very healthy, indeed, with some of the current / scheduled projects in the pipeline for the calendar year including Museum of Tenement Life, Henrietta St (Gem Group); Beauford College, Navan (Ganson Construction); Luttrellstown Community College Phase 3 (Actavo); Lusk Community College Phase 2 (Actavo); Little Britain St homeless accommodation Phase 2 (Townlink) and a new stable block at The Curragh Racecourse (Purcell Construction).
Within a relatively-short period of time, Phoenix Mechanical Ltd. has earned a solid reputation as one of the premier mechanical services providers in the greater Dublin area (and surrounding counties). Having hit the ground running, Gary Brennan is pleased to report that things are looking extremely encouraging for the company going forward.
Regarding the key to the success of the business to date, he notes: “Working within our capacities is crucial as we take our commitments very seriously and feel it would be foolish to jeopardise the relationships we have forged by working beyond our capacity and diluting the quality of our product. Repeat work is key and because of the wealth of experience we have working in live environments, we have been able to secure work in major hospitals like Blanchardstown, Tallaght and St Vincent’s.
“Working in occupied spaces is our niche and specialising in that has got us a lot of repeat custom as well as bringing in prestigious contracts like Google and the Central Bank, which is testament to our systems. It’s an entirely different discipline and mindset to working on a greenfield site, but it’s something I adapted to during the recession when there were no new builds and it’s really paying off now.”
Gary adds that the high standards insisted upon across every facet of the business are also critical. “We’ve already achieved the ISO and intend to achieve OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health & Safety) and Building Information Modelling certification this year as well to ensure that all of our standards are implemented at the highest possible level. At present, we directly employ eleven, all of whom are highly-skilled and experienced. All the staff undergo ongoing training to keep them up to date on all the latest innovations and systems.”
Looking to the future, Gary’s goal is to continue to move the company forward at a consistent and sustainable rate: “I’d hope to maintain the steady growth that we’ve experienced since the beginning and to continue to be the first-choice mechanical services company to our key clients. Ultimately, it’s all about maintaining relationships with the key clients we already have in addition to establishing new relationships.
“We’re very fortunate with the clients we have and enjoy strong partnerships with them as well as with our suppliers and subcontractors,” Gary concludes. “It’s a small city and a small community and your reputation is everything. So it’s vital to provide excellent solutions and to ensure that you are constantly maintaining and enhancing your reputation.”
