Mythen Construction Ltd is delighted to be a finalist in the 2022 Irish Construction Industry Awards for its successful delivery of the new Mortuary and Post-Mortem Building at University Hospital Waterford (UHW).
Shortlisted in the Health & Education Project of the Year category, the 1,030m2 building in Ardkeen features a public multi-faith prayer room with curved features along with high-finish concrete constructed canopied external receiving area, a walled courtyard, and several sensitively designed viewing rooms which aim to provide comforting and a respectful atmosphere in addition to housing an integrated post-mortem room, as well as a separate specialist forensic post-mortem room which will facilitate clinical requirements, including a raised viewing room for forensic and educational purposes.
The building also houses a collection of state-of-the-art equipment, within a single facility which is unique in Europe. The areas also benefit from a number of installed artworks commissioned for the building, by the Waterford Healing Arts Trust.
Designed by CJ Falconer & Associates, the design sought to create an elegant landmark structure, visible from the adjacent Waterford City-Centre arterial roadway, and retail / residential areas. The design was developed while being cognisant to ensure that no disruption would be created by the delivery of the building within the vicinity of the ‘blue-light route’ of a live hospital campus. Built by Mythen Construction in just under 18 months, the facility sets a new national standard and represents an enhanced service for the deceased, their families and loved ones. It is aesthetically pleasing, subtle and respectful, and has been favourably commented upon by both the State Pathologist and Assistant State Pathologist. The mortuary’s sight lines blend appropriately with the adjacent gate lodge and the 1950s-built sanitorium buildings to its rear.
“We are very pleased with the finished product,” stated Mythen Construction Ltd.
“It was a challenging project which incorporated the fitting out of specialist mortuary equipment, high-level mechanical and electrical integration in conjunction with a combination of high-quality façade finishes during a difficult pandemic period and on the Campus of a live hospital environment. It was a real team effort from all stakeholders, and we’re delighted to be recognised with the award nomination.”
